Courts will never call to demand payment, ask for financial info, or threaten your driver’s license.

If you get one of these messages — ignore it, don’t click links, and don’t share your information. Visit WaCourts website to learn more.

BLAKE RELIEF DAY SATURDAY IN TUKWILA: Join the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) and a consortium of legal professionals, community and court representatives, and volunteers for a Blake Pop-up & Justice Fair on Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Tukwila Justice Center, 15005 Tukwila International Blvd.

Representatives will be on-site to help individuals determine if their convictions are eligible to be cleared (“vacated”), clear unconstitutional drug possession convictions, get assistance requesting refunds for paid court fines and fees and other expenses, and connect with vital community resources.

In addition to legal help, guests will also be able to connect with local organizations offering support for housing, employment, health, reentry, and other services. This Blake pop-up is a collective effort to create an accessible, timely, and efficient path to constitutional relief.

Happy Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, everyone!
Many ask why this day is a celebration if July 4 is our nation’s celebration of freedom. With the myth that slavery ended with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it’s important to note that it was more than two years before another 250,000 human beings living in chattel slavery would be granted their freedom. This came on June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger delivered this news to Galveston, Texas.
This day became a state holiday in Texas in 1980 and a federal holiday in 2021. Now you know why people all over the country will be dancing, singing, and celebrating with their loved ones to commemorate Freedom Day.

PODCAST ON FIXING BLAKE CASES: For our March episode of Washington Courts Report, host Patric Haerle interviewed the AOC’s own Chris Stanley, Chief Financial and Management Officer, and Robin Zimmermann, the Blake External Relations Liaison, on the important work of the Blake Refund Bureau.

Highlights of the episode include a clip from a Blake-impacted individual on how having their record vacated has helped them, the history of the Refund Bureau, insight into how much money has been refunded to Blake-impacted individuals, and how much is still slated for distribution.

In 2021, the Washington State Supreme Court found the law criminalizing drug possession unconstitutional. As a result of this decision, known as State v. Blake, any Blake-related convictions in Washington State qualify to be vacated from one's criminal record, and any court fines or fees paid as a result qualify for financial reimbursement.
