🔥 TRAINING BEYOND THE HYDRANT
Not every fire scene comes with a hydrant nearby. That’s why SLCFD crews regularly train on alternative water supply operations to ensure we can move the necessary amount of water, no matter where the incident occurs.
Recently, B-Shift crews put those skills to work during training on establishing water supplies from static water sources, including lakes, ponds and rivers. Using a TurboDraft, firefighters can draft water directly from these waterways and transfer it into our fire apparatus, allowing us to establish a reliable water supply and support additional fire trucks operating at the scene.
One advantage of the TurboDraft is its ability to give crews greater access to water sources without requiring fire apparatus to get too close to the water’s edge when conditions or terrain make that difficult or unsafe.
Training also included several new tower evolutions with our new Tower 19, giving crews the opportunity to become familiar with the apparatus while working through different operational scenarios.
These skills are critical when responding to fires in areas where traditional hydrant systems aren’t available. The goal is simple: train for the challenges before we face them on an emergency.
