I was fortunate to attend Port Townsend High School when it was a grades 10–12 school. I still remember the large windows, the natural light pouring in, and the fresh air. From the third floor, I’d sometimes catch myself daydreaming, looking out at that beautiful view - a school that felt open, bright, and alive.

Twenty years later, when I returned to PTHS to begin my 33-year career as an employee, the building felt very different. The windows were small, many of them sealed shut. Ceilings had been lowered, natural light was scarce, and the campus felt dark and crowded. I remember trying to air out the copy room one day... only one window opened, and only a few inches. We lacked proper storage, appropriate meeting spaces for students, and the building had far too many unsecured entrances.

After decades of learning, working for the good of the students and staff, and caring for this campus, I know this: it is long past time to renovate Port Townsend High School. Our students and staff deserve a school that is safe, welcoming, healthy, and built for learning, not one they have to work around.

Please join me in voting YES on the school bond - for our kids, our schools, and our community.

Vote “yes” for resilience

At a time when it feels like our democracy is coming apart at the seams and we are witnessing many communities being tormented, voting “yes” for our schools and emergency services is a small but vitally important act of support for the strength, health and resilience of our community.

As a former Seattle Public School teacher, I can tell you that it is absolutely terrifying to be in an earthquake in an old brick building that has not been retrofitted for seismic resilience. It is similarly terrifying to be in a lockdown due to the threat of a shooter, knowing that there are multiple unsecured entrances to the building, as well as students and teachers vulnerable in portables.

I’m proud of the leadership of our superintendent Linda Rosenbury, the school board members whom we have elected, and the team that has studied the best path forward for the campus. I’m grateful for their prioritization of safety, security, energy, efficiency, sustainability, and accessibility. I look forward to students having access to better science labs and technical and career education spaces that will help prepare them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For folks wanting to learn more, there is detailed information available on the Port Townsend School District website. I particularly appreciated the bar graph that shows that a “yes” vote returns us to a property tax rate that is only slightly higher than the rate at which we supported our schools in 2020.

Please join me in voting “yes” for schools and “yes” for emergency services.
