LOOKING FOR SOMETHING FUN TO DO with the kids this winter? Join us at Steel Wheels Indoor BMX on January 2 from Noon to 1:30PM for a free Beginners-only open house that will introduce your family to BMX Racing.

It's a free event, and requires an RSVP, at the link below:
http://indianabmxleague.com

The Winter 2021 Indiana BMX League season starts January 9 (Noon to 3PM), and is also a Beginners-only program. The Open House is a no-obligation opportunity for your family to experience the fun, new friends and family time BMX Racing delivers. Five weeks of instruction and racing await!

During the 90-minute Open House, kids 4-15 will receive some basic instruction from our League coaches on riding our indoor dirt course, and then get on their bikes and RIDE!

Parents can choose to cheer and take photos from the sidelines, or get on a bike and ride with the kids.

Nearly any type of kids bike is acceptable...it does not need to be a fancy "racing bike." They will also need a helmet (bicycle, dirt bike, snow mobile are all OK).

Those without a bike or helmet can use our loaner equipment at no charge (first come, first served).

During the Open House, you will meet existing League families, and our all-volunteer League staff, allowing you to ask any questions you may have.

Get 2021 started with a fun, enriching activity for the whole family. RSVP now!

Indiana BMX LeagueOpen House The next Indiana BMX League Open House is January 2 from Noon to 1:30PM. The Open House will give your family a hands-on look at our Beginners-only League. All Portage city buildings will remain closed to the public until at least Jan. 4. Mayor Sue Lynch has extended the closure of city buildings due to the continued rise in COVID-19 positivity numbers and the 30-day extension of Gov. Eric Holcomb's executive order earlier this week. Porter County also remains at a red alert level.
City employees will continue to report to work and will continue to provide services to residents with a few adjustments:
- Park inquiries can be made via phone at 219-762-1675 Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm or via email at anytime at [email protected].
- Utility payments can be made at the drop box in front of City Hall, 6070 Central Ave., by mail, online or by phone by contacting the clerk-treasurer's office at 219-762-7784;
- For licensing and permit information, call the building department at 219-762-4204 and
- All other questions can be directed to the city hall switchboard at 219-762-5425.

All City Council, Board of Works and other public meetings will continue to be held virtually.
The governor’s order states all indoor and outdoor gatherings must be limited to no more than 25 persons. Masks and social distancing of at least 6 feet is required at all times.

Today the race course offers year-round opportunities, both indoor and out, for riders of all ages and skill levels. With plenty of competition, life lessons and a family atmosphere, Steel Wheels BMX is just the place for all who’d like to brave the track and give it a go.

City employees were treated to a big thank you Friday courtesy of the Portage Faith Action Network.
Gathered at the open air pavilion on the city’s north side, employees were treated to a luncheon of barbecue pork sandwiches, mostaccioli, cole slaw, chips, assorted desserts and beverages.
Shannon Burhans, executive director of the Portage Township YMCA, said the Faith Action Network is a gathering of community churches and the YMCA. It was founded a few months ago to address various social issues throughout the community, such as homelessness. They partnered with Family Promise of Porter County and continued their meetings, tackling social issues.
When the pandemic struck, FAN continued to meet to address issues facing the community and hosted events such as a community thank you for local health care workers at Portage Porter Regional Hospital and NorthShore Community Health and held a pray chain along Central Avenue.
Burhans said they wanted to thank city workers as well; those who continued to be on the front lines, from police to fire to sanitation workers and others who kept the city running during the pandemic and decided to host the luncheon at the open-air venue. Churches pitched in as well as business sponsors Monosol and Indiana American Water.
“I like the fact that employees can come together and have lunch. I’m happy the faith community can come together to host an event such as this. They are a great group of people who recognized the great employees we have in the city,” said Mayor Sue Lynch, adding the open-air pavilion was a safe site to hold such an event.
Burhans said FAN will continue to address social issues within the community and is always looking for additional partners. For more information on the group, visit their page at https://www.facebook.com/PORTAGEFAN/

This is Nancy Shuttz! She was the head custodian at Garyton School and also when it was the Adult Ed building! She stopped by Saturday to tell us she was so excited that we were not tearing the school down! She was thankful we were restoring the building. She also told us that she is the one who planted the 3 evergreen trees in the front of the building over 30 years ago. Thank you Nancy for your story!
