Good morning. This is Portage City Administrator Joseph Calhoun calling with some important information about the dangerous weather forecasted for the next few days. The National Weather Service has issued Heat Warnings for Thursday and Friday as the temperatures will be in the mid 90’s; however, with the humidity, the heat index will reach between 105-115 degrees. A heat index of this magnitude is in the danger range for the likelihood of heat disorders with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity. We urge everyone to take these warnings seriously and to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the heat if possible and to be vigilant for your friends and neighbors for signs of heat related medical symptoms. Check on your elderly neighbors and don’t forget that pets are also extremely susceptible to overheating outdoors. Our police department will be extremely vigilant for children and pets being left in vehicles and strictly enforce the laws in these cases.

A cooling center will be available Thursday and Friday at Woodland Park at 2100 Willowcreek from 9 am to 9pm. The Splashpad at Founders Square is also a good option to escape the heat with the kids as well.

If you need non-emergency assistance, please contact any city office. If you have a medical emergency or need to report a child or animal left in a hot vehicle, please call 911.

Good afternoon. This is Joe Calhoun, City Administrator from the City of Portage with some information about City events as Independence Day approaches. Tonight will be our first outdoor Movie at Founders Square sponsored by Bam Pizza. We will be showing The Lego Movie and it will begin at dusk. Concessions will be available for purchase.

The Portage Food pantry will be walking the parade route collecting non-perishable food items for those in need. Please bring an item with you to the parade to donate.
Our annual Fourth of July Festival will be held at Founders Square beginning at 5 pm. Vendors will be on hand and the band Mr. Right will be playing at the brand new Amphitheater at Founders Square. Because the sod is brand new at the amphitheater, we cannot allow chairs on it, so please plan to bring blankets to enjoy.
Fireworks will also be held downtown near Founders Square at dusk on the 4th. Seating for the fireworks will be all around Founders Square with the most space in the field between the new police and fire stations on Central Avenue.
Ample parking for all of the evening festivities will be in the field near Portage Mall just off Central and Vivian.
Lastly, we have begun spraying for mosquitoes throughout the City and note that garbage pickup will be delayed a day next week due to the Holiday.
Thanks for your time and on behalf of all of City officials, we wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Good morning. Not as beautiful of a day ahead as yesterday but it beats the winter.

We have not been advised that the boil advisory was continued past the 6 am deadline so it should be safe to assume that the system is ready for normal use and consumption. (Note: as of 7:10, spoke with IAWC and confirmed that advisory lifted. )

Have a great day and enjoy the rest of your week.

Good afternoon. This is Joseph Calhoun calling again from the City of Portage with an update on the boil advisory issued this morning by Indiana American Water Company. This advisory will continue until 6 am tomorrow morning unless otherwise notified. Again, the advisory is for areas along US6 in Portage, most of unincorporated Portage Township and areas in and around Chesterton. For a map to determine if your home or business falls into this area, visit our breaking news section on our City website homepage at www.ci.portage.in.us

Good morning, this is Joseph Calhoun from the City of Portage. Indiana American Water has issued a boil advisory for the southern area of the City. We are waiting to receive further information from them on the exact cut offs but at this time- those definitely affected are homes and businesses along US6, all those south of US 6 and approximately a block North of US 6. We are awaiting on information from them showing the exact affected areas and we will have on our website and pages when it becomes available.

Contrary to earlier reports and some reports on Indiana Americans own website, the entire City of Portage is not affected. This has been confirmed with their staff just moments ago. Only the areas that I recently outlined are affected.

This boil advisory was put in effect due to a drop in water pressure in the system and not to known contaminants in the system. A boil advisory is required when pressures drop and therefore, you should bring water to a rolling boil for 3 minutes and cool before consuming.

We will call again later to keep you updated as more information becomes available.

This is a test of the City of Portage Emergency Notification System in conjunction with the State of Indiana's Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Had this been an actual severe weather emergency, you would receive a message much like this stating the emergency and you would seek shelter in a secure lower or center area of your home or nearest building. As we approach the severe weather season, please use today to review severe weather safety plans in your own home or office that could save your and your family's lives. Again, this message and the outdoor warning siren activation was only a test.

FAQ- Its been snowing since yesterday morning and I didn't see a plow on my side street until this morning. Why??

We'd love to have a plow everywhere, all the time, just as we'd love to have a fire station on every corner and a police car on everyone road, but we all realize that just isn't possible.
Our plow plans and the planning that we did for yesterday's event were followed and executed quite well. We are beyond proud of our personnel. For the safety of the City overall, we must focus on keeping our mains and secondary roads open. This allows for emergency vehicles to get to you and if you are able to get out a few blocks, to get to the grocery store or work. Because of the timing and rate of snowfall, we had to replow our mains and secondaries 10 plus times. This obviously effects our ability to get into the neighborhoods more quickly.
It's also important to note that our departments plan and communicate so well, that if an ambulance or police car needed to get into a neighborhood that hadn't been cleared yet, a plow truck would lead the way in and out. Plow trucks would also dispatched to lead our ambulance to out of town hospitals if needed (not needed last night but has been done many times before).
We certainly understand that not having your street cleared of snow when you need to get out is a hindrance, but rest assured that we are using every resource that we have available to effectively and efficiently get every mile of roadway safe and clear in a timely manner.

Good morning Portage. Just wanted to update everyone on the snow storm. The snow stopped about 6 this morning. We don't have exact snow totals yet but appears to be easily 12".
Our mains and secondary streets are completely clear and many of our residential streets are done, including over half of our cul de sacs already. We are out working on the remaining residential streets and cul de sacs and should have completed by late afternoon.
Mailboxes- this was a very heavy and wet snow. There are undoubtedly many mailboxes damages from the snow coming off the plow blades. The plows themselves don't strike the mailboxes but the force of the snow itself. Please contact the street department at 762-4564 to report the damage. A temporary mailbox will be brought out as soon as possible until a new one can be installed.
Trash Service- we are working to complete Wednesday's route today. It may take a bit longer than normal. We will get Thursday's route tomorrow.

All City offices are open and last reports from NIPSCO show approximately 200 outages. They do have crews working Portage at this very moment.

02/25/2016

Good evening, this is Joseph Calhoun calling from the City of Portage. A few important updates for you regarding the winter weather. Porter County has declared a state of emergency that prohibits all non emergency travel on county roads. This does not effect roadways in the City limits; however, we do urge you to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as the blizzard warning remains in effect until midnight.

Plow crews will be in out force overnight and finish cleanup during the day tomorrow.

Lastly, sanitation service will begin again tomorrow morning. We will pick up the rest of Wednesday's trash routes tomorrow and move Thursday's routes to Friday.

Thanks for your time and have a wonderful evening.

02/24/2016

Good afternoon, this is Joseph Calhoun from the City of Portage with an update on our weather. A blizzard warning remains in effect and we anticipate very heavy snow and wind conditions throughout the day that will make traveling on the roads extremely dangerous. Please limit your travel if at all possible.

We are starting to get reports of some lines down and power out throughout the City because of the heavy snow and winds. Please contact NIPSCO if your power is out to assist them in pinpointing the problems. If you or someone you know is in need of a warm place to stay until your heat is on, Woodland Park will be open and available.

If you require any non-emergency assistance from the City, please call our non-emergency line at 762-3122.

Please remember that your vehicles must be off of the roadway so that we can effectively get the roads clear of snow.

Lastly, today's sanitation routes had to be suspended due to the weather. We will call again later this evening to let you know what to expect from sanitation the rest of this week.

Our departments are all working together incredibly well to tackle this snow and we are very proud of them. We will continue to meet throughout the next 12 to 24 hours to stay on top of any situation that might arise.

Thanks for your time and stay warm and safe.
