We also promote connections with the wider community through our involvement with the Portage Chamber of Commerce, Portage and South Haven Public Libraries, and the City of Portage, Ogden Dunes, South Haven, and Portage Township as a whole. We believe in working together for the benefit of our children and families.

Our School Safety Specialists and building leaders from across the district met this morning to discuss current school safety protocols and our priorities for the coming school year.

At least one individual in each of our schools and service buildings is a certified School Safety Specialist through the Indiana Department of Education. This group consists of principals, staff members, department directors, School Resource Officers, our Associate Superintendent, and community leaders. Each year, these individuals receive at least 10 hours of training in prevention of and response to school emergencies. They often assist in ensuring that each of our schools and service buildings have the tools they need to support a safe environment.

Thank you to our School Safety Specialists for your work throughout the school year to support the safety and security of our students and staff.

Our innovative learning coach, Mr. Dietrich, read to Miss Greer's kindergarten class at Crisman Elementary! He read "he Stinky Cheese Man" by Jon Scieszka, and the students loved listening to him read in his different voices. As he read the story, the students made predictions about what would happen next and compared the story to the Gingerbread Man.

The student were extra excited to hear the voice of their guest reader do the announcements that afternoon!

Thank you to Mr. Dietrich for sharing your love of reading with our Crisman students! #PortageProud

The Portage High School Choirs were awarded the All-Music Award for choir by ISSMA this year!

They are one of 14 high school choir programs in the state to receive this award this year. Students participated in virtual concert and solo and ensemble festivals in both the fall and the spring semesters and received gold ratings at each of those events to qualify the high school for this award. It speaks to our students passion, drive, and love of singing, even in the most difficult of times.

Our Crisman Elementary School fifth grade students have been reading “The Honest Truth,” and they had the opportunity to meet the book’s author, Dan Gemeinhart in a Google Meet!

Gemeinhart talked about his childhood and how his life experiences affected his writing career. He moved around a lot, and every school was different except for the books in the library. If he fell in love with a book and he moved, he could walk into a new library at a new school and find the same books he loved. He also explained how he was rejected 99 times before someone agreed to publish “The Honest Truth.” The students learned how he worked hard on his writing career and improved his craft.

Thank you to Mr. Gemeinhart for sharing your life story with our students and inspiring them to succeed! #PortageProud
