The Portage Community: Stronger Together initiative has been awarded the One in a Million Award by the Multiplying Good organization.

Leaders from Portage Township Schools, the City of Portage, the Portage Township Trustees Office, and the Portage Township YMCA collaborated through the Stronger Together initiative to provide citizens with access to food throughout the COVID-19 public health emergency. The trustee’s office increased its food pantry distribution. Portage Township Schools hosted a weekly meal pick-up in which families took home a week of breakfasts and lunches for their children. The Portage Township YMCA hosted a daily lunch and dinner distribution for children and adults. The group met virtually every week throughout the COVID-19 shutdown to compile resources and advertise them. The combined efforts of these leaders and organizations meant every citizen in Portage Township had access to nutritious food during this difficult time.

A number of our staff members made significant contributions to this initiative. We would like to recognize our food service staff members who assembled the meals for our distribution each week and our principals,, teachers and district staff members who distributed the meals to our families.

Read more about the award below.

Our Virtual Summer Enrichment Camp students made some amazing creations during their Silly Spaghetti activities last week. The students used dried noodles and marshmallows to build two structures: one that was tall, and one that was strong. Many of the students said they made adjustments until their structures met their goals. In the second activity, the students created beautiful artwork with paint and cooked noodles on paper.

This week, the students are reading "How to Eat Fried Worms" and completing a guided reading packet.

Great job to all of our camp participants! #PortageProud

Remember to submit your #2020Census by July 31. It takes just a few minutes to fill it out either online, by mail, or by phone. Visit 2020census.gov for more information.

Remember: The Census helps communities receive valuable resources. By completing the Census, you are making a positive and crucial impact on our community.

#PortageProud

Did you know when the city's police, fire or parks departments applies for a grant, one of the tools used to determine how much in federal dollars could come back to the community is the U.S. Census.
That's one of several reasons why it is so important to fill out your Census form, either online, by mail or over the telephone.
Portage is doing pretty well. We've got nearly a 71 percent response rate, but we know we can do better. Our goal is to reach an 85 percent response rate by the time the Census closes on July 31.
It's not hard. Take a few minutes and go to the website: https://2020census.gov/en.html and get yourself counted.

Our first Virtual Summer Enrichment Camp, Coast Along a Rainbow, took place this week! Our students learned about rainbows by creating them with a prism and a variety of light sources. Then, the students created their own rainbow coasters with a cookie cutter and beads. During our Google Hangout, we talked about the colors found in rainbows, and everyone found that sunlight created the most vivid rainbows with their prisms. Great job to all of our week 1 participants! #PortageProud
