The Portage Holiday Parade returned to the city this year thanks to a partnership between the city and the Portage Kiwanis Club, and its success on Saturday ensures it won’t be going away again...
Today's the day! Let the celebration begin!
Portage will herald in the holiday season with a full day of activities on Saturday, Dec. 3.
First, stop by Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road for the Portage Department of Parks & Recreation annual Christmas Craft Show. The two-day event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Then, if you want to see the Big Guy arrive in style in Portage, the Santa's Parade of Toys, sponsored by the Portage Kiwanis kicks off at 4 p.m. at Central Avenue and Willowcreek Road. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be escorted to Founders Plaza. Don't forget to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots along the route or stuff the ambulance when you get to Founders with toys.
Following the parade, the Portage Event Partnership will host the tree lighting ceremony. They'll be some singing thanks to the Portage High School choir, hot cocoa and cookies along with a couple other surprises.
Finally, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be taking up temporary residency at the plaza to listen to the wishes and desires of all the youngsters there.
It is going to be a fun day, sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit.
Hope to see you there!

Dictionary Project,
Today we put children names and labeled them for delivery. Every child in Portage Township School gets in one in the 3rd grade. We have give out over 9,000 over the years.
We have over 100 people registered to attend the Regional Autism Training Event on Oct. 24 at Portage High School, but there is room for more who would like to learn about autism and how to interact with those on the spectrum.
Also a big THANK YOU to the Portage Kiwanis Club for donating to help defray the costs of putting on this program.
The Portage Township Autism Action Coalition, organized by Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy, and the Porter County Search and Rescue Team will host a Regional Autism Training from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday, Oct. 24 at Portage High School West auditorium.
Seats are still available for this important event.
Capt. Gerald Turning, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, father of an 18-year-old son on the spectrum and president of Blue Bridge Autism Training will present the free program.
The training will be open to law enforcement, emergency medical services personnel, educators and others who would like to learn more about identifying individuals on the spectrum, understanding sensory challenges, overcoming communication challenges and strategies for de-escalating situations from Porter, Lake and LaPorte counties.
Law enforcement agencies attending will also receive logins for one training for officers not able to attend the in person event. Quantities are limited.
Please see the flyer for additional information or visit bluebridgetraining.com to learn more about the organization.

Speaker/Program:
Today we heard all about prescriptions and drug interactions from Dr. Lisa's husband Tai, a Pharmacist at the LaPorte Walmart. He pointed out than many prescriptions are cheaper on-line and to ask your local pharmacist questions as they have been trained more than most doctors regarding drug interactions and where you can get the best discounts.
Happy Teacher getting her supplies from the Supply Closet.
Portage Kiwanis Meeting:
Today the group assembled first aid kits in old medicine bottles to help with our Operation Christmas Child project. We meet Tuesday mornings each week at Blueberry Hill on Central Avenue.
Another great project for our community. Thank you teachers for all you do. Have a great year!
Porter County Fair:
Members were helping keep children safe by wrist-banding them to aid law enforcement if they become separated at the fair. We had a second group spreading the word about what we do to the public inside the Expo Center booth. The Porter Fair runs thru this Saturday night. Thank you the Porter County Central Communications E911 for allowing us to help today.
