City officials and members of the community attended an unique groundbreaking ceremony Thursday at NEO adult education campus.
The ceremony marked a partnership between NEO and Sun FundED, an education service company.
The partnership will create over $1 million in energy savings to support ongoing learning opportunities for both students and adults in Northwest Indiana.
Through development, management and oversight of a new, sustainable solar power service on NEO's campus and Sun FundED's unique School Sponsorship and SAMI Solar programs, Sun FundED helps position NEO to enhance classroom programming for energy, engineering, solar power and sustainability, while laying a solid foundation for new educational opportunities to prepare students to meet the demands of a growing and changing energy industry in Indiana and across the U.S.
Speakers included Kelly Hipskind, founder of Sun FundED and Portage native and Rebecca Reiner, NEO executive director.

If you need Wi-Fi access following this week's storm, there are options available.

All PTS schools offer sidewalk-to-sidewalk Wi-Fi access. Park in the lots, bring your chairs, and practice social distancing while you complete your work.

Woodland Park is open to provide Wi-Fi access to those who need it. Visitors must wear masks and practice social distancing. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is available on a first come, first served basis.

Please use these option in lieu on visiting the Portage Police Station at this time. The PTS and Woodland Park options are move conducive to a healthy environment, and we want to ensure our city police officers remain healthy as well.

Portage Township - Brendan Clancy, Trustee

Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy would like to thank the Portage Kiwanis Club and Portage City Councilwoman Debbie Podgorski for becoming sponsors for the Portage Township Autism Action Coalition’s township-wide autism awareness project.
The PTAAC is a partnership between the Portage Township Trustee, Portage Police Department, Portage Fire Department, South Haven Fire Department, Porter County Sheriff’s Department, Ogden Dunes Police Department, Ogden Dunes Fire Department, Portage Township Schools and Porter County Central Communications to increase awareness about the neurological condition which affects 1 in 59 children.
In Portage Township Schools alone, 197 children have been diagnosed on the Autism spectrum.
The project aims at providing additional education and training information for the township’s first responders; providing sensory kits for first responders and introducing an emergency identification bracelet program for caregivers of children diagnosed on the spectrum.
PTAAC is presently raising funds to purchase 200 sensory kits. The kits, which include items to assist first responders in deescalating a situation involving someone diagnosed on the spectrum, will be distributed to police and fire departments, schools and other organizations within the township.
Please see the attached flyer for additional information. Any and all donations and sponsorships are welcome.
Thank you.

As Indiana reopens and gets #BackOnTrack, Indiana State Department of Health recommends that all Hoosiers wear a cloth face mask or covering in public settings. N95 respirators and surgical masks are critical supplies that should be reserved for healthcare personnel.

Portage Community Lifesaver and AHA Heartsaver Hero Awards.

Last night retired Captain TJ Chavez presented Sarah Darrel and Brianna Manning with their awards at the Portage City Council Meeting.

On January 28th retired Captain Chavez collapsed on the YMCA walking track. Brianna Manning Recreation & Enrichment Coordinator for the Portage YMCA and Sarah Darrell RN Health & Wellness Coordinator St. Mary's performed CPR and shocked him with an AED saving his life.

The AED’s at the YMCA are in place due to a fundraising effort with Portage Kiwanis Club and Portage Fire years ago.

Great work by these two YMCA employees to save a man who had spend his career saving others.

How do you become a volunteer. When I was with my husband, no longer together we were Kiwanis members and used to help where I could. Is there a chance of joining again? I was a member of the Huntington Club.
We've just started a page called “Kiwanis Video Meeting Info”. This page could serve as a resource database of all Kiwanis Club’s video meetings so that others may join in and learn about your club or to share ideas. Come on and like the page and share your info. Check it out at: https://www.facebook.com/Kiwanis-Video-Meeting-Info-104258634621454
