Portage continues to set the standard for peaceful demonstrations in Northwest Indiana. Today's Black Lives Matter rally at Founders Square was excellently put together, allowing a variety of voices to be heard and perspectives shared. Mainly focused on protesting racial injustice, speakers also presented on topics such climate change, equality in education, and the fight against cancer.

The organizers, reaching across the isle, extended an invitation to Austin Bonta and Antonio Gutierrez, Portage Republicans "GOP's" co-founders and content editors, to speak, which we accepted. The event concluded with a sensitivity training led by Portage Councilman Ferdinand Alvarez that was followed by a march to Airport Road and back to Founders Square.

Hard to believe we only have 3 weeks until the debate at Hobart’s majestic Art Theatre. Continuing our look at the candidates who have agreed to debate. Tonight we look at Spencer Lemmons.

I have grown up and lived in Northwest Indiana my entire life. After graduating from Hobart High School in 2008, I added to my family history of serving my country. I joined the Marine Corps serving four years. After ending my contracted service with an Honorable Discharge, I craved to continue to serve a cause greater than myself. So, after being out of the Marines for three days, I began a career as a 911 dispatcher at the Hobart Police Department. After several months, I was hired by the Munster Police Department as a Patrol Officer.
Once I officially began my career, I knew that this was the job for me. After working at Munster for four years, I was hired at the Hammond Police Department. With the love of the job came with heartbreak. As my time as a police officer, I have been in neighborhoods, both rich and poor, and have seen how people have struggled and continue too. I have been in situations where I’ve had to console women of domestic violence. During my time, I have had to walk into homes where there is no furniture, where kids have no food, no electricity, fatherless homes. As a Police Officer, I have seen first-hand what 35 years of Democratic Policy has done to our community. While the rest of the state thrives, our district still remains with a higher unemployment than both the state and national average. Along with the population dwindling in our district and the lack of economic opportunity, I knew that the time is now to do something about it.
As American author Oliver Herford once said, “A man is known by the silence he keeps”. Well, I am remaining silent no longer. I will fight for our community by creating tax incentives to bring in businesses of all sizes to employ our communities. Working with both state and federal lawmakers to help crackdown on the crime the ravages our communities will also be a top priority. With your help, I will bring a conservative voice to Northwest Indiana and take it all the way to Washington, D.C.

I 100% support term limits on all levels of Government.
