Why Removing Cats makes things worse....(The Vacuum Effect)

Territorial openings: When you remove or kill cats in an area, you leave behind available resources like food and shelter.

New arrivals: Unsterilized cats from surrounding areas quickly move in to take over the empty territory.

Population rebound: The new cats breed, meaning the population bounces right back to where it started, making removal an endless, costly and cruel cycle.

Why Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Works-

Stops reproduction: Cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated against Rabies & FVRCP, ear-tipped for identification, and safely returned to their outdoor home.

Eliminates growth: With the breeding cycle broken, no new kittens are born, allowing the overall colony size to naturally and gradually decrease over time.

Reduces nuisance behaviors: Spayed and neutered cats do not yowl, fight over mates, or spray, which greatly reduces complaints from neighbors.

Community support: Managed colonies see improved health and stable numbers.

Did you know that when community cats go to Street Cat HUB Inc. (SCH), they receive treatments if they have infections?
These 2 older kittens both had upper respiratory infections.
They both received treatments while they were being neutered and vaccinated.
Both look amazing after spending some time with their amazing team. Thank you SO much, Street Cat Hub!!!

HUGE thank you to the volunteers that drove Portales Community cats to the phenomenal Street Cat HUB Inc. and back!

Dave drove them to ABQ on Tuesday. They were all spayed/neutered, vaccinated and some were treated for upper respiratory infections.
Thursday, Joyce picked them up after they were fully recovered and drove them to Santa Rosa where she met up with John who drove them back to Portales!
These trips would not be possible without an amazing team of volunteers. Thank you!!! 🙏

And of course, a HUGE shout out to the amazing people at Street Cat Hub for the excellent care they provide and all the compassion they have for the little souls that come through their door. 🐈

Are you seeing ear tipped (or ear notched) community cats around town?

That means they are spayed/neutered and vaccinated against rabies.
They also have a dedicated caretaker.

Another Portales group is on their way to be fixed, vaccinated and ear tipped. Thank you Street Cat HUB Inc. for accepting our community cats.

Some cats pictured have the "hall pass" (ear tip or ear notch). They got to attend and enjoy the all you can eat buffet and then went on their merry way with full bellies.

HUGE shout out to Louan Catalanotto Minzner and her friend Deb of Asbury Park that worked to get "Paul the Tomcat"!
Louan reached out for guidance, several months ago, on a trap savvy cat, and after some trap training..... Paul calmly walked right into the trap!!! He is now safe and sound waiting for his clinic appointment.
Thank you to Catsbury Park for holding Paul until his appointment!

Community Cat Spotlight-Buster Brown
Buster was trapped in a local feral colony, but appeared to be in some pain when he was trying to walk! Street cat hub, with the help of local veterinarians did x-rays and found out he had two fractured vertebrae near the base of his tail.
Buster spent several months recovering with us and we found out he was a friendly guy! Now he has been adopted through one of our rescue partners, and is living the good life!
We love being part of success stories like Buster’s!

This kitten crawled into a car engine, went for a ride and was found after the driver got home and noticed a tail sticking out of her car's front end.
Does anyone recognize this kitten?
She most likely is from the ENMU area.

Anyone who knows me, knows I did 1-2 cats at a time while TNRing my own inherited colony. There was no TNR assistance when I purchased my house that came with a colony of cats.
The previous owner had been feeding (and inadvertently breeding) community cats.
I did 1-2 cats at a time and paid full spay/neuter prices for every community cat I fixed.

NOW there are resources to fix/vaccinate community cats at ZERO cost.

This needs to be said...
If you allow your intact pet cat outside to free roam. You are the problem. This is how community cats, feral cats and stray cats start.
