🎬 πŸ“£πŸ’¬ON AIR: 5th graders!

News Crew applications open today, Monday, August 24th, and are due back to the front office by Friday, August 28th.

Our morning news show is produced right here and broadcast to every classroom, and our crew is the face of Highlands. Every member gets time anchoring, filming, graphics, green screen; all of it.

Heads up: it's a real commitment. Our News Crew records in the library with Mrs. Turner, every Tuesday–Thursday at 7:45 a.m.

We need students who are responsible, respectful, and flexible enough to step into any role on any day.

Applications come home with 5th graders this afternoon.
Read the front page together before your student signs. πŸ¦‰

πŸ“š The Highlands library is officially open for student checkout, and classes have already begun visiting! Students are learning our checkout procedures, exploring the collection, and taking home their first books of the year.

Ask your child what they checked out; we'd love for the reading to continue at home! πŸ‘πŸ“–

πŸ”Žβ›΅ Inquiry in Action in 5th Grade! β›΅πŸ”Ž

Mr. Forrest’s fifth graders were putting the PYP into action through an engaging, inquiry-based science investigation! Students designed, tested, observed, and reflected on their boats while making meaningful transdisciplinary connections between science and social studies.

As students experimented with their designs, they connected their learning to their current Unit of Inquiry, thinking about the role boats played for early explorers. This is what transdisciplinary learning is all about: students seeing that learning does not happen in isolated subjects, but connects across disciplines and to the world around them. 🌎

Students were also strengthening their Approaches to Learning (ATL) communication skills as they shared ideas, explained their thinking, listened to one another, collaborated, and discussed what was and wasn’t working. And judging by some of those priceless faces, there were definitely a few unexpected discoveries along the way! πŸ˜‚πŸ›Ά

We love seeing our Highlands Owls become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers as they ask questions, test ideas, learn from challenges, and make connections across their learning.

This is inquiry. This is transdisciplinary learning. This is IB in action!
