Don’t miss the 7th Annual Piedmont Neighborhood Plant Sale. It’s not sponsored directly by the Piedmont NA but rather by some serious plant lovers who live in the Lovewood subdivision in Piedmont. Here Is a flyer and poster we sent out. Please forward this to those who may be interested in attending.

This year, we’ll also have some free trees from Friends of Trees: Oregon White Oak, Red Alder, Redtwig Dogwoods and Cladrastis kentukea (Kentucky Yellowwood). Be sure to check out our Facebook site for a partial plant list.

A chemical called 6PPD-quinone found in the rubber in our tires and in the rubber crumbs of our athletic fields is pretty lethal stuff for fish and other animals in the sea.

In fact, it’s so deadly that if you were to place a single drop of the chemical in an aquarium the size of an Olympic sized swimming pool, it would kill at least half of the coho salmon in that pool.

That’s pretty nasty stuff. Tire companies should be required to stop using that chemical. And, we need to find ways to deal with any runoff from our sports fields or change to a material like cork that is not toxic.
