Gov. Tina Kotek has just signed a new law to help protect young people and vulnerable users from the harmful influence and poor guidance of AI chatbots. The law will require chatbots to connect users expressing suicidal thoughts with real-life support like the 988 Crisis Lifeline and clearly disclose when users are interacting with AI instead of a human.

This law is an important step in su***de prevention and reducing gun violence. Access to immediate support, compassionate human connection, and crisis resources can help save lives during moments of mental health crisis, especially when a firearm is accessible. As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, this new law is an important reminder that protecting mental health and preventing violence go hand in hand. Thank you to Gov. Tina Kotek for advancing protections for young people and people experiencing mental health crises.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Let's talk about the impact of mental health on gun tragedies, and the impact of gun tragedies on mental health.

Most gun deaths in Oregon are su***des. Access to a firearm during a moment of crisis can turn a temporary feeling into a permanent loss. That’s why su***de prevention programs, secure storage of fi****ms, and access to mental health care matter.

At the same time, gun tragedies leave lasting emotional wounds behind. Survivors, families, witnesses, first responders, students, and entire communities carry trauma long after headlines fade. Anxiety, grief, PTSD, depression, and fear can shape everyday life for years.

Mental health support and gun violence prevention are not separate conversations. In Oregon, we need both: stronger community care and policies that help keep people safe during moments of crisis.

Every life saved matters.💚🧡

Thanks to our volunteers who joined us for the University of Oregon Campus Walk this weekend. We walked in support for su***de prevention and in solidarity with survivors. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of su***de, please know that you matter. There is hope, and there is help. Calling 988 is a good place to start.

Following weeks of high profile incidents of gun violence around the country, The Trump administration announced over 30 proposed changes to federal gun regulations, weakening an already frail patchwork of policies meant to protect the public.

Here’s what you need to know as we continue to fight for gun safety in Oregon.

On April 16th, former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was involved in a tragic act of violence in which he fatally shot his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, inside their home before taking his own life. Dr. Cerina Fairfax was an accomplished dentist and devoted mother to their two teenage children, who were reportedly present at the home at the time of shooting.

Two days later on April 19th, a separate tragedy unfolded in Shreveport, Louisiana where a man took the lives of eight children and injured two women. Seven of the children were his own, with the eighth being a cousin, and the two women were reported to be his wife and his girlfriend. The children ranged from the ages of just 3 to 11 years old.

Domestic violence is an urgent crisis across the United States and in the state of Oregon. All gun violence is preventable, and domestic violence is no exception. Action must be taken to keep guns out of the hands of abusers, and with your support, we the Alliance for a Safe Oregon are fighting to keep families safe.

Join Alliance staff and volunteers in Eugene to support the University of Oregon’s Out of the Darkness Campus Walk. We’ll walk together with the UO community for the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention’s (AFSP) fundraising event, which engages youth and young adults in the fight to prevent su***de, the third leading cause of death among people ages 15-24.

According to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in 2023, 58% of all gun deaths were su***de. Their report also notes that su***des accounted for the majority of all firearm deaths every year since 1995. The rate of su***de by firearm in Oregon is significantly higher than the national average, at 76%. With increased awareness, investment in mental health resources, and secure firearm storage, we can take the right steps towards a reduction in firearm su***des.

Help support the AFSP by walking this Saturday or by donating through the link in our bio. Donations help cover the cost of providing mental health resources to high schools and universities, training support group facilitators, and providing funds that contribute to youth su***de prevention research. Your efforts, walking and fundraising, help make su***de prevention and mental health awareness a national priority. ***de

On April 2, 2026, Secretary of Defense Pete Hesgeth signed a memorandum allowing service members to carry their private fi****ms on military installations. Policy without evidence and consulation is dangerous and this decision doesn’t protect service members—it puts them at greater risk. Our Firearm Su***de Prevention Program Director, Steve Schneider, wrote about how risky this memo really is and the implications of it when associated with military life.

We’re excited to introduce ASO’s current interns: Taylor Bennett & Maria Rivera!

Taylor Bennett – our Social Media Intern – has brought creativity and intention to ASO’s platforms. Her favorite internship moment was getting to know the team and contributing to a mission-driven environment. She’s especially passionate about building community and fostering connections across different backgrounds, which aligns closely with ASO’s work. In her free time, Taylor enjoys cross-stitching and learning about medieval history.

Maria Rivera – our Policy Advocacy Intern – jumped right into our work this past short session. Through lobby days, testimonies, and policy research, she’s already found meaningful ways to use her voice in advocating for gun sense policies. Her favorite internship moment was sharing her experience with the Alliance during a legislative wrap-up meeting featuring Rep. Sarah Finger McDonald. Outside of the office, Maria enjoys playing sudoku and watching movies.
