You may know that Donna Hayes, a founder of PDXCCP, is an activist against police brutality. Her grandson was killed by PDX police in 2017. She often spoke about a few people who reached out to her after Moose’s murder and helped guide and support her during her grief and anger.
One of those
was dan handelman. She spoke of his tireless fight for justice and her deep gratitude to him.
Donna was torn between going to dan’s burial yesterday and protesting in the car caravan. She decided dan would have wanted her to continue to be out there protesting, so she chose the caravan.
If you were with us yesterday, you saw the group at the edge of Lone Fir cemetery as we passed by. They were attending a burial. They raised their fists and cheered us on as we passed. We wondered if could have been dan’s group.
After the protest, a woman came up to us and told us she was at Lone Fir Cemetery, and that it was indeed dan’s burial, and that they heard the horns coming from up block and that we passed by at one of the most emotional and tearful moments and that it was just the most fitting thing for a dedicated activist like dan. She said it felt like kismet.
Donna said when she heard this she felt a weight lift from her shoulder for missing the burial and being able to pay her respects to dan.
On this week's episode of "OPB Politics Now," we discuss a longtime Portland advocate and his legacy.
