SENECA entered the Canal from the eastern side in Maryland and proceeded west into Delaware Bay. The 14 mile long canal, owned and operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, connects the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay.

Throwback Thursday! The original SENECA, built in 1908 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and names after the Senecas, a tribe of Iroquoian Indians of western New York. SENECA fought submarines in World War I, was one of the first cutters to patrol the ice zone in the Northern Atlantic, and took part in the inauguration of President Herbert Hoover. We are honored to bear her name and remain a proud symbol of the Unites States Coast Guard!

One of our own, MK3 Christman, was among those recognized by Admiral Ray. A well-deserved recognition for his great work on the last patrol!

Today, Admiral Ray addressed a large gathering of Coast Guard men and women during an all hands at Base Boston. As the Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Ray recognized members from various units and fielded questions regarding topics within the Coast Guard.

A great story about a local hero. Congratulations to AST2 Michael Kelley on his well-deserved recognition!

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=767704210342342&id=447475265698573

Last night at the Association for Rescue at Sea Reception, AST2 Michael Kelley from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, was honored along side cruise ship captains and crews, and merchant mariners from around the world who have performed the year's most daring and dramatic rescues at sea.

Kelley was awarded the Association for Rescue at Sea Gold Medal for a rescue that took place November 2018 - when he saved four lives in 50-knot winds and 30-foot seas - 60 miles East of Rockland, Maine.

“Once at the raft, Kelley triaged the survivors, discussed order of operations and began the exhaustive swim to an area far enough away from the raft where it would not be flipped by the helos rotor wash. With each delivery, he repeated the journey towing the four survivors, two of which were unable to swim, to the rescue basket. After the final hoist, Kelley sank the life raft and entered the helicopter fully exhausted.”

The excerpt above taken from the award citation says it all. The incredible courage, stamina and selfless service to these survivors and the Nation is inspiring, and I couldn't be more proud!

Congratulations AST2! Well deserved!
