Happy 246th Birthday to the United States Navy! On October 13, 2021 the crew of USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL celebrated the Navy’s birthday after a steak and lobster lunch. The celebration began with a message from Admiral Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, which was followed by a short history of the US Navy read by Machinist’s Mate Chief Petty Officer Select Matthew Dennis and Fire Controlman Chief Petty Officer Select Luis Nieto. Then Commander Timothy Shanley, Commanding Officer of USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL, addressed the crew with closing comments, highlighting the significance, origin, and history of the Navy’s surface fleet. The ceremony concluded with the cutting of the birthday cake by Commander Damian Kins, Executive Officer; Master Chief Petty Officer Brandy Gennette, Command Master Chief; Senior Chief Petty Officer Samuel Sands, the ship’s 3M Coordinator; and Seaman Sunny Stephenson, the youngest crewmember on board. The theme of the United States Navy’s 246th birthday is “Resilient and Ready.” Hooyah Navy!

CHURCHILL Sailor Coaches NJROTC Unit on Damage Control

On October 2, 2021 Port St. Joe High School competed against 21 other Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps high schools, comprised of approximately 1200 Cadets including Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine units from all across Florida at the annual Iron Bear competition held at Central High School in Brooksville, FL. CHURCHILL’s own Damage Control Petty Officer First Class Dominique Wright volunteered to train the Port St. Joe NJROTC Cadets for the competition’s Damage Control events. Although Port St. Joe did not place in that event, DC1 cheered the unit on and helped motivate the cadets to win 2nd place in the Hamster Wheel event, one of the major events of the day. Hooyah Port St. Joe NJROTC, Hooyah DC1 Wright, and Hooyah Bulldogs!

Winston S. Churchill Enters Rare Dry Dock Period

WSC Team,

I wanted to ensure you were tracking all the hard work the CHURCHILL Sailors have been putting in down in Florida.

For the first time in 10 years, CHURCHILL entered a dry dock for a Mayport maintenance period last Friday, 20 AUG.

Over the past 15 months of my Command tour alone, the ship has sailed close to a motivational 81,000 nautical miles, executed a deployment to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East all while in a 9-month COVID-19 bubble. We had an above average Board of Inspection and Survey performance right on the heels of that deployment, executed numerous Fleet-level taskings, and then, completed a homeport shift.

The Sailors of WINSTON S. CHURCHILL are the best of the best and will continue to get even better during this maintenance period.

Many thanks for your continued support of the Team. Go Bulldogs!

Very Respectfully,
CDR Tim Shanley
Commanding Officer

General information

Propelled by four, quick response General Electric LM2500 Gas Turbine Engines couple with two Controllable Pitch propellers, WINSTON S. CHURCHILL has tremendous maneuverability and a top speed of 31 knots. Three Allison 501k Gas Turbine Generators provide the ship with up to 7500kw of electrical power to the ship. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL can make up to 24,000 gallons of fresh potable water through two revers osmosis distillers per day. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL matches maximum survivability with her potent offensive capability. All steel construction is used in the ARLEIGH BURKE class destroyer. Extensive topside armories placed around all vital combat systems and machinery spaces while the larger plane area hull form significantly improves sea keeping ability. Acoustic, infrared and radar signatures are reduced and vital shipboard systems have been hardened against chemical, biological and radilogical agents. State-of-the art propulsion and damage control systems are managed by Fiber Optics Data Multiplexing Systems (FODMS) with built-in redundancy for increased survivability. Home to a crew of more than 35 officers, 25 Chief Petty Officers, and 150sailors, WINSTON S. CHURCHILL offers most services associated with a small town, including dining, banking, ATM, laundry, postal, barber, two fitness centers, library resources and shopping facilities while maintaining more than 10,000 spare parts. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL is a powerful weapon, capable of staying at sea for months at a time. The best technology combined with an outstanding crew makes WINSTON S. CHURCHILL the premier warship designed to carry out the U.S. Navy's mission today and well into the 21st century

It is interesting that a United States ship is named for a foreign dignitary. I am curious: how many other ships are named for foreign people, places or things?
