The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9, Capital Virginia District fourth quarter meeting at Hilton Garden Inn, Suffolk. This is very close, plan to attend. Saturday meeting is from 9am to mid-afternoon.
Dr. BESSIE A. STANBACK became a member of our organization in June as a FOO (Friend of Optimist). She is from King and Queen County, VA and earned a BA degree from Virginia Union. At her first teaching position in the Portsmouth Public Schools, she met another teacher, Willard Stanback, who later became her husband and while earning a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University and a PhD from Syracuse University, she was promoted to math specialist with the school system. WILLARD became a member and a past President before his passing. BESSIE attended many of our meetings with her friend EVELYN SAWYER who became her sponsor
Thursday, July 20 12:30 Mario’s 611 Airline Blvd. (757-673-7799). EVELYN SAWYER and BERNADETTE ALLEN-JOHNSON have charge of this meeting. They have Angle Power who was our first place Essay winner. Angie is a rising senior at I.C. Norcum High. The 2017 Essay topic was “Chasing optimism in the face of challenges”. She will read her Essay and perhaps speak about being a high teenager.
Thursday, August 17 12:30 Mario’s 611 Airline Blvd. (757-673-7799). Our speaker will be MyKayla Moore, a January graduate of I.C. Norcum high. She will be speaking about her experiences as a student representative of the Portsmouth School Board. Program arranged by LES BELL.
Friday, July 14 Farm Fresh at Victory Crossing 1-5 pm, MOZELLE PARKER and a youth group at Zion Baptist church will again be selling lemonade for funds to be given to CHKD for their children’s cancer support. We recommend you suggest to your friends and family to stop by and get a drink or simply leave a donation-it should be hot that day.
Thursday, July 13 12:30 Subway, 3537 Airline Blvd. (757-465-6018), behind Rite Aid, members of the Board are expected and all club members are welcome and may have a proposal like DELORES DUDLEY.
Our two BIG events took place on Thur. May 18 and Sunday, May 28. On the evening of May 28, 1964 your Club became a part of Optimist International. Our only charter member cannot recall the big event location. The other, May 18, was the voting of our next administration. Since we have not had a full Board since August 1, 2014, these officers are in a position now instead of waiting until October 1, the beginning of the Optimist year. We elected President-CECIL PALMER, Vice Presidents- ROBERT LORENSEN and FLETCHER PARKER, Treasurer-LESLIE BELL, Directors-CONTANCE MABRY, MOZELLE PARKER, KIMMERICK VICK and MAGGIE WEAVER. We lack three positions. Immediate Past President’s. Our last President served a few years and moved to New Jersey. The two preceding Presidents of multiple years passed away while still very active. These three served us well for the past decade. So we have no Immediate past President. We just need a President Elect and a Secretary. If you have any such inclination, call CECIL (757-535-5836) or speak with any of your Board members.
The May newsletter stated we have another FOO member-GEORGE E. THROCKMORTON. He had his childhood locally, meeting ALEX WATFORD at Crestwood High and he attended Norfolk State for a year, prior to serving as a mechanic in the Vietnam conflict.
IMPORTANT!! WE NEED YOUR HELP, The Optimist Club of Portsmouth needs someone to facilitate the page. This is not a time consuming task, maybe 1 to 2 hour a month max. If you are interested or know someone who may be able to help please contact Les Bell 757-488-5013 or Message Admin.

MOZELLE PARKER has made the club’s first purchase of our fund raiser. There is a variety of hard candy. We sell a box for $6.00 and a bag for $1.00. As you approach your neighbors, co-workers, relatives, and church friends, it is a great time to invite them to an Optimist meeting. Tell them our profit helps to feed 12 outstanding high school youth and their parents on November 17 and we will purchase about 20 gifts for youth aged 12 and under for children of jailed inmates. If you did not obtain some candy for selling at the October 20th meeting, or need more, call MOZELLE (543-3241) or CONNIE (377-3225) for arrangements.
At our October 20th meeting, the club voted to accept BOB LORENSEN as a Director. This gives us five Board members. We still have open positions. Talk to CONNIE, BOB, LES, FLETCHER, or MOZELLE; or even at our next Board meeting November 10th; and tell us you are interested.
Thursday December 15th 4:30PM Sheriff’s Training Facility 1725 Green Street, one block east of the fire station on Effingham Street.
Our party for some youth of (non-violent) Portsmouth jail inmates. Sheriff BILL WATSON has given us much help with this project since we approached him years ago. January 2016 BILL became a Friend Of Optimist member. AMANDA WIMBERLEY continues to be our key person with this event. We will take about 20 youth, aged 12 and under. A gift from our club will be given. AMANDA will donate drinks and her homemade cookies plus some store bought snacks.
Thursday December 8th 12:30 Subway 3537 Airline Blvd (465-6018) (behind Rite Aid)
Board meeting. We have had four people who have told us they plan to join between now and December. We will have a new roster to distribute. So if a non-member is seeing this or if a member is speaking to a prospect, let us get a signed application and proper funds by December 8th. November $45.00 and December $35.00. The club sends $15.00 processing fee to Optimist International to enroll each person.

Saturday November 5th
Capital-Virginia District quarterly board meeting.
It is with great sadness that we announced the passing of Alex Watford. A member since November 1995 and past president, Alex passed away yesterday evening. Sympathies go out to his family.
CONNIE MABRY has volunteered to be a director as a Board member and was voted into our Board at our September meeting. Does that encourage other members to ask to serve our Board? CONNIE makes five Board members. We still have open positions. We should have more than five to make our decisions.
Meetings held Monthly on the third Thursday at Mario's Italian Restaurant, 611 Airline Blvd, Portsmouth, VA 23707
