Cyneese Johnson, this is in repose to your question about duties of the President Pro Tempore. I assume duties of the Lieutenant Governor (LG), specifically; presiding over the Senate when LG Justin Fairfax is away from the Capitol or out of the chamber for any reason. It was my great honor to preside on several occasions this year. Most notably was on January 27, 2020 when I presided during the vote on the Equal Rights Amendment; which passed in the House and Senate. The Constitution requires the Senate to elect a President Pro Tempore to serve as presiding officer in the absence of the Vice President. It’s an #Elected position and I received the unanimous vote of both Democratic and Republican members of the Senate. President Pro Tempore is authorized to preside over the Senate, sign legislation, and issue the oath of office to new senators.
