At 4-H camp, campers rise up to become counselors in training and then become counselors. They grow in ways that are humbling to those of us who watch from afar. They have talents that are sometimes unknown because they are humble. Please witness the talent of one of our Portsmouth counselors who grew up at camp.

Some of Wednesday's highlights included animal science class, yoga, outdoor living skills, fun with foods, and dance class which is taught by Norfolk's own Thrift. One of rec times most popular activities, Gaga now has two rings for even more action. The whole camp was excited for the dance as well as the traditional Junior camp fire, led by our wonderful teen counselors. We definitely see some future staff among that group.

Tuesday morning is the first day of classes it is also usually the most crowded late line as new campers and counselors adjust to the schedule. Building responsibility is a keystone of the 4-H camp experience along with many other traits. Leather craft riflery, and shotgun are 3 classes where responsibility is paramount. Campers learn to use tools responsibly and safely and apply these lessons to many other aspects of life.

After dinner the wonderful Airfield staff lead the campers in "get acquainted mixers" which lead into a yummy ice cream social followed by our first campfire, lead by our own Taffy, who camped with Portsmouth. This is her home week so it was an honor to have her lead the first campfire.

Danville 4-H Agent Daniel Hale conducted a small study of 4-H agents at camp. Using Fitbit data from agents he was able to put together a report which included, total number of steps, distance traveled, and hours worked during a typical camp week. Below are the results for the 3 agents who submitted data at the Airfield 4-H Center. The conclusions are pretty obvious, we walk a lot and sleep very little at camp. Totally worth it though.

Total Steps: 225,361 (3)
Distance Traveled: 89.02 miles (3)
Hours Worked: 253 (3)

Avg. Steps in a day: 15,024, in a week: 75,120
Avg. Distance in a day: 5.93 miles, in a week 29.67
Hours worked in a day: 17, in a week: 84

Hours Slept a Night: 5 hours, 58 minutes.

Virginia 4-H has 6 camping centers throughout the state. In addition to serving as a regional summer camp facility many of them provide quality programming during the fall and spring. The Jamestown 4-H Center is located on the James River and is only about an hour from Norfolk and Portsmouth. Like Airfield they too offer great programming for youth.

Wednesday was a wonderful day at the office, youth from Cross Creek and Ansell Gardens apartments came to visit our garden. When they were told that they would be exploring the garden to find insects there was some apprehension on the part of the majority of them. However within 5 secs of stepping outside they were immediately enamored with all the activity from the crickets and grasshoppers jumping around to the butterflies and caterpillars they saw. The big favorite were the worms, oh the worms. Everyone wanted a worm. It was obvious that many of them had not had this experience before and it was honor to provide it to them. It was a day many of them will remember and hopefully we will provide them with many more memories in the future.

4-H has the power to change the lives of people, it can inspire youth to do things that even adults might struggle to do. Meet Kenzie Hinson a 4-Her from North Carolina. She is changing lives and making the best better. She was inspired to start her food pantry after giving a speech as part of a 4-H competition as a 10 year old.

"I’m in 4-H, and for a speech competition I learned about hunger experienced by kids my age and by grownups. I learned that in Wayne County (where I live), one in three children and one in five elderly people don’t have enough to eat every day. Once I knew that, I knew I had to do something.

One rainy day, my mom and I were driving down the road by my house, and I just couldn’t stop thinking about those people. I said, “Mommy, I want to start a food pantry.” She said, “Okay, let’s figure out what we need to do.” And that was that. We wrote down a plan, and we started a food" pantry.http://www.madpantry.org/
