Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held its annual Apprentice Graduation and Awards Ceremony Nov. 7 at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Va.
The 138 graduates, representing 26 trades across the shipyard, have completed a four-year training program which includes academics, trade theory and on-the-job experience. At the graduation, the apprentices received a Technician Career Studies Certificate and were converted to the journeymen level of their trade.
The Honorable J. Randy Forbes, Congressman of the 4th District of Virginia, was the keynote speaker for the ceremony. “A young man I talked to just recently said all his life he had opportunities to play sports, he had scholarships, he could go where he wanted to go to school,” said Forbes. “The dream he had in life though, what he wanted to dedicate his life to, was serving his country. He will go to the Naval Academy, he will work hard, and he’ll become an officer. One day he will command a ship and he will have his stomach in knots worrying about what the enemy is going to do and everything else that could happen, but the one thing he will not worry about because of you is whether his ship is ready for the task that it’s meant to do because you will make sure it’s ready to do that.”
The Apprentice Program Class of 2013 valedictorian, Courtney J. Blasius, was recognized at the ceremony. Blasius is a Portsmouth resident and graduate of Salem High School in Virginia Beach, Va. “Today as we cross the stage, it will be our final steps as apprentices and a new journey will begin,” said Blasius. “Wherever your life takes you, never forget the path that led you there. The apprenticeship is far from perfect but it has molded and made the persons we are tonight and who we will be in the future.”
NNSY Commander, Capt. Mark Bridenstine said, “My challenge to you is find an outlet for your passion to improve what we deliver to the Navy, our community and each other. The opportunities are many and your focused energy is needed now. Together let’s forge a shared vision knowing we are collectively working to improve Norfolk Naval Shipyard and creating a workplace where we not only collect a paycheck but are proud to be a part of as we continue to deliver worldwide first-time quality and material readiness to the ships of the United States Navy and the men and women who serve on them.”
This year marked the 100th anniversary of NNSY’s Apprentice Program, one of the most historic and honored apprentice programs in the nation. The program has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, in partnership with the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA), as a 21st Century Registered Apprenticeship Trailblazer and Innovator.
NNSY, a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command, is the oldest industrial facility belonging to the U.S. Navy, and specializes in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines.

"This message was updated at 10:20 am on Sunday 6 Oct. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced yesterday he is recalling most of the Defense Department civilians who were placed on furlough as a result of the government shutdown.

As a result of this decision, and in accordance with guidance received, Norfolk Naval Shipyard is returning to normal operations as of the first shift Monday, Oct. 7, 2013.

Although the government shutdown continues, all shipyard employees are now excepted from the furlough and shall report to their normal worksites, beginning with 1st shift, or on their regularly scheduled shift on Monday. Employees should continue to monitor the Shipyard's page and the employee information line 396-9551 for any additional updates."

House votes to give furloughed federal workers back pay

Bi-partisan. The Senate is expected to pass a similar bill and President Obama will likely sign it. If you have been furloughed, you will NOT get back-pay until the shutdown is over, but you WILL get back-pay eventually!

(CNN) - A bill that provides back pay for furloughed Federal workers during the government shutdown unanimously passed the House during a rare Saturday session on Capitol Hill.

All,

I am getting ready to drive to DC. I don't have any solid plans, I am winging it, playing by ear.

I will make a point to visit the offices of my local legislators.

Barring any other rally's or formal plans, I will be sleeping on the capitol steps.

I will be prepared to camp out at the mall if there is an Occupy America equivalent going on. I'll have a cooler with sandwiches and drinks. And a log book for any visitors to sign, lending support.

If you are in the neighborhood, call my cell. I'll give you my current location. I may not have much access to internet... E-mail me at [email protected] and I can read it as long as I can keep my laptop charged.

I am NOT taking any partisan stand while there. I am looking for congress to put us, the federal employees, back to work.

Come stop by the IFPTE Local #1 "Command Post", sign the book and show that you supported putting federal employees back to work.

Sincerely,
Michael Phillips

It is unfortunate that it is coming to this. Spread the word. All personnel are to report in tomorrow, Oct 1st. Many of you will receive a furlough letter and an application for unemployment. Local #1 was involved, albeit minimally (management didn't see fit to include us in most meetings) in the preparations. Once again, make sure to go in to work tomorrow. Hopefully congress pulls together and does their jobs tonight.

Well written. Bravo Chris!

Well written. Bravo Chris!

When a group of unionized employees negotiate a contract with their employer over their pay, benefits and working conditions, they have a vested interest to include language that would prevent the employer from undermining the agreement.
