On Wednesday, March 10th the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Fire Weather Watch for the region due to forecast low humidity and gusty winds. These conditions make it easy for vegetation fires to start and spread quickly. Over the next several days, units throughout Loudoun County responded to numerous outside fires. On Sunday, March 14th, just after 10am, one of these fires in the Aldie area required a large response to contain and extinguish. About 2 1/2 hours later a 2nd large incident, a mulch fire, occurred near Lovettsville. Around 2pm, a 3rd large outside fire was dispatched in Purcellville. An hour later, there was another incident near Purcellville.

Just before 4pm, Engine 618, staffed by Loudoun County Fire and Rescue was alerted for an outside fire in the Cascades neighborhood area near Marguritte Square and Potomac Falls High School. SERV 611, outfitted as a brush unit, was being staffed by off duty volunteers due to the current Fire Watch conditions and added on to the call.

The first arriving units discovered a fast moving brush fire that was spreading towards the houses on Marguritte Square. Quick-acting neighbors had already organized a make-shift bucket brigade to try and control the spread of the fire. A call was issued for two additional brush units from Purcellville Volunteer Fire Companyand Arcola Volunteer Fire Department, and a Battalion Chief.

As the fire continued to spread, more units were requested, bringing 4 more engines (one of them being a reserve engine from Sterling that was upstaffed by other off duty volunteers to support this incident), 2 tankers (from as far away as Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department), the county rehab unit, Canteen 611, Truck 618, and the Sterling Volunteer Assistant Chief. During this time, Sterling volunteers surged to staff a 2nd additional engine to support other emergency calls going on in the Sterling area, and many other volunteers were organized and dispatched to the brush fire to lend a hand. After about 5 hours, the fire was under control and units were returning to service. Throughout the night and the next day (Monday), units returned to the area as the deep-seated fire continued to show itself.

♻️ Recycling reminder: Don't place your recyclables in plastic bags.

Plastic bags get caught in the machinery used at sorting facilities, which then jams the machines and leads to shutdowns in the recycling process. Materials that would normally be recycled are disposed as trash when placed in plastic bags.

Use paper bags or cardboard to help secure loose recyclables.
