Greenough Potomac Volunteer Fire Department Volunteer fire department providing fire, rescue, and medical services to the communities of Potomac and Greenough, Montana. We are not a FIRE DISTRICT.

The Greenough Potomac Volunteer Fire Department provides both fire and medical services to an area of about 177 square miles. This area begins at mile marker 10 on Highway 200 near Johnsrud, and extends east to the Missoula and Powell County line. It runs from the Nine-Mile Prarie on the north to the crest of the Garnet Mountains to the south. Within this area there are approximately 570 residence

s. The Department finances its operation through the assessment of fees. The Missoula County Commissioners established this Department in 1993, under Montana Code 7-332401 (Fire Service Area). The Department then became, and still is, an entity of Missoula County. In a fire district, an evaluation is made of the total value of properties within the district, and then a mill levy is established to determine how much each property owner pays in property taxes for support. Those with larger holdings pay more than those with smaller holdings. We are, rather, a FIRE SERVICE AREA. In a fire service area, a fixed fee is established for particular units within a designated area. Our units are 'resident' and 'business'. The fee for a resident, regardless of type and size, is currently $60.00 per year, and this includes all out-buildings on the residential property. The current fee for a business is $100.00 per year, and we define a business as a place where the public enters to transact business. The Greenough Potomac Fire Department is governed by a five member Board of Trustees. Each member is elected to the Board by the public to serve a three-year term. The Department is managed by a Fire Chief appointed by the Trustees. There are no paid members of this Department as we are a totally Volunteer organization.

Last night at 1107 pm GPVFD ran a medical up near the Hole in the Wall area. GPVFD responded with 1 ambulance, Life flight and 2 Missoula county deputies.

Out of respect for the family and HIPAA we won't talk about call details or out come!

Life flight did circle around for awhile, trying to find a SAFE landing zone. One without horses and or power lines.

The following acts are prohibited until further notice:

Building maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire.

Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

The following acts are prohibited from 1:00 pm to 1:00 am:

Operating any internal combustion engine.

Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame.

Using an explosive.

Operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails.

Exemptions:

Note: An exemption does not absolve an individual or organization from liability or responsibility for any fire started by the exempted activity.

Persons with a written waiver that specifically authorizes the otherwise prohibited act.

Persons using a device fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the device.

Operating generators with an approved spark arresting device within an enclosed vehicle or building or in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the generator.

Operating motorized vehicles on designated roads and trails.

Emergency repair of public utilities and railroads as per attached conditions.

Persons conducting activities in those designated areas where the activity is specifically authorized by written posted notice.

Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.

All land within a city boundary is exempted.

Other exemptions unique to each agency/tribe.

Stage 2 fire restrictions begin Friday, August 7th in Mineral, Missoula, and Ravalli Counties.

Fire officials in Missoula County have raised fire danger from high to VERY HIGH due to dry conditions, high winds, and consistent hot temperatures, effective immediately July 30, 2026.

When fire danger is high, fires can readily spread in open, dry grasslands and can burn in heavy timber and dead and downed trees, especially on windy days. Residents and visitors are asked to use caution when using fire. Keep campfires small and completely extinguish them before leaving camp. Please do your part in preventing wildfires so fire resources can continue to assist with these natural lighting starts.

General outdoor burning remains closed and there are no current fire restrictions in place in Missoula County. For information about outdoor debris burning seasons, fire prevention and safety, and wildfire preparedness within Missoula County, please visit MCFPA.org. Visit MTFireinfo.org for information on fire restrictions throughout the state. Visit Airnow.gov for more information about wildfire smoke throughout the area.

âť—Fire Danger Raised to VERY HIGHâť—

The entire Lolo National Forest is now in VERY HIGH Fire Danger due to ongoing hot and dry conditions.

Very High fire danger means fires start easily from all causes, and immediately spread fast. Vegetation continues to dry out rapidly. Small fires can quickly become large fires and exhibit extreme fire intensity. These fires can be difficult to control and will often become much larger and longer-lasting fires.

There are currently no fire restrictions in place on the Lolo National Forest. Residents and visitors are urged to use caution when recreating or working outdoors and to visit mtfireinfo.org to learn of fire restrictions in place throughout Montana.
