The residents in Prescott might be noticing the large dumpster located on 207 2nd Street this past couple of weeks. The building south of the library once owned by Bill Fischer Hatchery years ago and later owned by the city, is due for demolition. As years have passed, the building has slowly deteriorated both inside and outside. It was needing structural stabilization, new roof, windows and the floor was giving way in multiple areas. The city utilized it for storing Christmas Decorations, Street Signs, equipment and the library stored seasonal totes there.

The roof tested positive for 3% asbestos and the DNR and EPA state anything over 1% must be removed by a licensed crew. A group out of Des Moines removed the roofing on May 4-5th and did a meticulous job keeping debris from going into the creek. They were even gracious enough to cut several trees down next to the building in order to place plastic down to wrap debris in. They hauled the roof and the trees off was an added plus! Bids for demolition will be reviewed on May 12th, with demolition starting thereafter.

The previous Mayor and Council had worked on getting funding for the bridge which has become unstable and they received a one million dollar Federal Grant. We have since worked to see we have the remaining funds on our end to start the work. Starting in June of 2027 Engineers and crew will be placing concrete box culverts to replace the unstable street and walking bridge. There will be new paving and sidewalk starting at the south corner of the park and will extend to the stop sign next to the library. Paved parking will be added. When completed it will be a wonderful addition to our small community.

On another note, the DNR did their survey of the Prescott Watershed Dam which is for flood control for the town. Several areas needed attention. Riprap to stabilize one area of the dam will be completed next month with Travis Henderson coming in with the lowest bid.

Spring is here and mowing is in full swing. We are wishing our local farmers a safe and productive planting season.

Jolene Hinrichs, Mayor
