Prescott Unified School District is excited to announce the grand opening of its Farm to School Food Forest Learning Lab with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2024. The event will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Prescott High School, located at 1050 Ruth Street, Prescott, AZ 86301.

The Farm to School Food Forest Learning Lab is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing educational opportunities, promoting sustainable practices, and providing fresh, local produce to students and the community. This innovative project aligns with PUSD’s commitment to fostering a healthy and environmentally conscious school environment.

Event Highlights:

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: The official unveiling of the food forest learning lab will feature a ceremonial ribbon cutting with remarks from PUSD officials and community leaders.

Tours of the Food Forest Learning Lab: Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the new food forest learning lab, which includes various fruits, vegetables, and educational garden spaces.

Educational Activities: Interactive sessions and demonstrations will be available to educate visitors about sustainable agriculture and the benefits of the Farm to School Program at PUSD.

Community Engagement: This event is a chance for community members to engage with the project, learn more about its goals, and celebrate the collective effort that brought it to fruition.

“Our PUSD Food Forest Learning Lab at Prescott High School is a model of how enthusiastic staff, community generosity, and external grant funding can come together to provide incredible learning opportunities for kids. The possibilities for standards-based learning in the areas of science, vocational education, and health and wellness are exciting,” said Clark Tenney, Superintendent of Prescott Unified School District.

The Farm to School Food Forest Learning Lab is part of PUSD’s broader initiative to integrate more hands-on, experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum while fostering a deeper connection between students and their food sources.

The Farm to School has harvested over 100 pounds of produce in the past week! We have fed students at lunch, garden clubs, and during taste tests with their classes! Students were able to harvest, process, and enjoy fruits and vegetables they have grown themselves!

What we were enjoying this week: Corn, cucumbers, tiger melons, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, yellow squash, potatoes, figs, blackberries, pomegranate, strawberries, and an eleven pound watermelon!

We wanted to extend our gratitude to the plants and all the people that make these experiences possible for the students of PUSD!

We at Farm to School are thrilled to announce that we were awarded a $10,000 grant from Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation for PHS's Food Forest Learning Lab!

Through this generous grant from Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, we will be able to include additional seating, educational signage throughout the learning lab, educational materials and resources for classes to utilize, and a completed outdoor classroom, to take the food forest we designed and built in June, and turn it into a fully functioning learning lab!

By creating a food forest learning lab that is adapted to the new wave of education, where learning spaces are reimagined and built around the desire to inspire students, create spaces for not only academic enrichment, physical education, mental health rejuvenation and cutting edge learning opportunities that are experiential by design.

For your support in this mission we here at Farm to School thank you Sprouts!

Farm to School has been hard at work today, harvesting 28.5 pounds of produce from the school gardens to be served at 2 campuses for lunch tomorrow!

We harvested tomatillos, green beans, and yellow squash from PHS, GMUES, and DG!

We appreciate everyone's continued support of our District wide Farm to School Program that maintains all 10 school gardens, and hope students enjoy tomorrow's school grown lunch offerings!

PHS Students and Families,

Prescott High School is having our annual “Meet the Teacher Night” on Thursday, August 15th from 5:00-6:30 pm. This is an open house, so parents/guardians are able to come at any time during the evening to visit their students' classrooms and explore the PHS campus. Meet the Teacher Night is not a parent teacher conference as those will happen later this semester. Parents/guardians will not follow a set schedule but instead will be provided information material on their students' courses and be given an opportunity to get to know each of their teachers.

Mile High Middle School is home to 500 amazing students, 45 dedicated staff, and a Grand Old Cottonwood Tree. Recently PUSD was advised that the massive old cottonwood tree on the south end of the Mile High Middle School sports field could present a future risk to students and visitors. The tree is beautiful and a part of Prescott’s history. However, it is likely over 200 years old, and the limbs weigh thousands of pounds. Years ago, in an effort to preserve the life of the tree and keep visitors to the Mile High MS field safe, a hollow portion of the trunk was shored up with concrete. Over the years, numerous limbs have been trimmed to improve the health of the tree. Currently, many enormous limbs are horizontal to or even growing toward the ground. Every living thing has a lifespan. The Grand Old Cottonwood Tree has already far outlived an expected lifespan for this type of tree, and may be less structurally sound than it once was.

PUSD has consulted with a number of professional arborists and with our liability insurance company. Their conclusion is that one of two things must happen to increase safety for future visitors and students. Either:
1) The tree must be cut down and removed. --OR--
2) The tree must have potentially problematic limbs trimmed, and the immediate area around the tree must be fenced to prevent climbing.

After much consultation, PUSD has chosen to continue to try to preserve the life of the Grand Old Cottonwood Tree by contracting with professional arborists to trim problem limbs, and by fencing the tree area for the safety of students and visitors. Access to the field and use of the track will be maintained. Next time you visit Mile High Middle School, give a wave to the historic tree that has shared space with thousands of energetic students for the past 85 years!
