Some holiday fire safety tips from our local fire chief.

Station 46 Chief Mario Batista, and all members of East Windsor Vol. Fire Co. 2, wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving – and ask that you'll take EXTRA CARE in the kitchen as you prepare meals for your family. The folks at First Alert advise:

1. NEVER leave the stove or oven unattended. (This is the NUMBER ONE cause of kitchen fires.)

2. CHECK your oven before beginning the "PRE-HEAT" process for items you may have stored there, including Tupperware, cutting boards, etc. (Do the same thing before performing the "Self-Cleaning" feature.)

3. NEVER open the oven door in the event of an oven fire.
Turn off the oven and call the fire department.

4. In the event of a stove top fire, carefully smother the flames with a pot cover or wet towel and call the fire department.

5. Have a kitchen fire extinguisher nearby.

6. Make sure your smoke detectors are working.

7. Keep children away from ovens and stoves, open fires, candles and matches.

9. Don't overload kitchen outlets with electric mixers, knives, coffee makers and food warmers.
