Our Story

2nd Hand Ranch & Rescue is a small independent wildlife rehab home and all animal rescue. Nancy has been rescuing wildlife since she lived in Minnesota as a child and her mom saved orphaned squirrels, injured birds and lost kittens. We are a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitation Center under the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and work closely with many other rehabbers as well our our local veterinarians, shelters, Conservation Police and DNR. All wildlife is given lots of TLC, and raised with the goal to release back into the wild where it is most happy. BUT WAIT...... we are more. We are also a Licensed Illinois Department of Agriculture companion animal rescue . We are foster based - dogs stay in foster homes until we can find a permanent home. Our niche are the hard luck cases..... the older dogs that have found their way to 'death row' in animal controls and in open door (kill) shelters, dogs with medical conditions that need much TLC to mend. Many of our old dogs are permanent residents as they are hospice or have had such abuse that we feel they need special long term care. Our Hospice Program currently has 8 old souls here. The Long Term Goal of 2nd Hand since we now are a 501 (c) (3) Charity is to grow our wildlife rescue as well as create a sanctuary for abused and senior animals of all kinds. We dream of creating a weekend getaway for folks who want to spend a day in the country working with animals and learning about the beauty rural Illinois, Fall of 2019 has been great for us and we have started building our retreat. We hope to be open Summer 2020 for weekend guests.
