On this #nationalfirstrespondersday, we recognize the extraordinary jobs of our very own first responders and the hundreds of thousands of police officers, firefighters, EMS workers and dispatchers who dedicate themselves to public safety. Our volunteers sacrifice so much to serve our community each day—often missing personal time, sleep, family time, holidays, and bed time stories with their kids. They see, hear and experience things that many will never even consider are a reality. Many end up with nightmares, flashbacks and suffer from other job-related stresses. But this doesn’t stop them, and that is why they are our heroes. We see their sacrifice and thank our first responders and first responders nationwide!

2019 - 2020 Explorers started this week. They introduced themselves and were off learning about different over the counter medications and identifying signs/symptoms of when to use each, completed their first 10 medical terminology flash cards, and discussed homeostasis as a primer to start learning about different human systems. Next week, we start the Circulatory System.

Are you 14-16 years old and interested in EMS or medicine in general? PVRS has a unique Explorer’s program designed for teens looking to immerse themselves in the medical field. During your time as an explorer, you will learn advanced first aid and CPR skills, take field trips to many of the public safety entities across the county and state (including AirCare and the Metropolitan-Washington Airports Authority fire station), and make great friends along the way! Many of the explorers become members of PVRS and go onto get their EMT, Firefighter and even paramedic certifications. If you’re interested in EMS or medicine, this is a great way to learn and explore such a diverse field! Stop by the station to pick up an application or email [email protected].

Our Explorers were excited to visit AirCare 3 Medevac on Saturday 21 Nov, 2015. They listened to the aircrew, asked great questions, crawled all over the helicopter, and were engrossed as they watched them dispatched to an emergency. Many thanks to AirCare 3 for allowing us to see such great EMS professionals at work.
