Fellow Mustang Marines,
On August 12, 2018, I proudly assumed the duties as President of the Marine Corps Mustang Association (MCMA). We are a unique organization whose primary purpose is to advocate and provide career-enhancing support for Marine Officers who have enlisted Marine Corps experience. Made up of Mustang Officers with a broad spectrum of successful military and civilian experience, we pursue our mission through mentoring, networking, and facilitating relationships that assist Mustangs in their military career and civilian transition.
Founded on 10 November 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Robert E. Richter, USMC (Ret), the MCMA is a full member of and participant in the National Marine Corps Council of Agencies. Membership to the MCMA is open to any active duty, reserve, retired and honorably discharged Officers who, after having served on active duty in the enlisted ranks of the Marine Corps or Marine Corps Reserve, rose to the officer ranks and served as a commissioned or warrant officer in the United States Marine Corps or another branch of the United States Armed Forces. Honorary members of the MCMA include Gen Alfred M. Gray, 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps, and Gen James Mattis, current Secretary of Defense.
Each year, the MCMA holds its annual Muster which includes its general business meeting for members to attend where new officers and directors are sworn in, a board of directors meeting, and dinner. The Muster is open to all active MCMA members, spouses, their guests and widows/widowers of members. Our next Muster will be in Branson, Missouri, from Sep 17, 2019 – Sep 22, 2019, and will be a joint Muster/Reunion along with the 2d and 3d Marine Division Associations.
The MCMA has many challenges before it. As we all know, recruiting and retaining members is the lifeblood of any membership organization. I plan to implement changes that will inspire Marine Mustangs of all eras to see the value in joining the MCMA as well as encourage those of my peer group and generation to get involved. What is even more critical to our continued growth is the establishment of State Chapters. Currently, we only have three chapters – the Florida Mustang Association, the Desert Mustangs of Arizona, and the Camp Pendleton Mustangs. My goal for my first year as President is to lead by example by establishing a Lonestar Mustangs of Texas Chapter in hopes that others will follow. Other goals include, but are not limited to, establishing a scholarship fund for the surviving dependant of a fallen Mustang, sponsoring an annual golf tournament to raise funds for a designated veteran charity, coordinating an attendance of MCMA members at an 8th & I Evening Parade each summer, using the MCMA as a foundation to initiate yearly MOS reunions, and reactivating the Marine Corps Mustang Spirit Award presented to a Marine 2nd Lieutenant or Warrant Officer from the Graduating Class at the Basic School, Quantico.
To achieve these and our other goals, the MCMA needs new members like you with fresh ideas and the motivation to keep the Association alive and growing. To become a member of the MCMA or If you’ve been a past member and have not renewed your membership because you felt that the MCMA was of no benefit to you, I encourage you to visit our website at
www.MarineCorpsMustang.org to join or renew your membership and help us define who we are and what we want to mold our Association to represent. For those of you interested in having a greater role than just being a member, please consider stepping up for a leadership position, such as one of our Director vacancies, to help us build the MCMA into the illustrious membership organization it has the potential to be.
Semper Fidelis,
Alex J. Childress
