On Saturday, I had the privilege of presenting a City of Racine Proclamation to the Racine Family YMCA. The YMCA a place that played a big role in my own story.

Growing up, the YMCA was more than just a gym or a hangout spot. It was a place where I learned about leadership, teamwork, and giving back. The YMCA poured into me at a young age, and now I get to stand on the other side recognizing the same organization that helped shape who I am today.

That is what makes this moment special. The YMCA continues to do incredible work for our youth, families, and neighborhoods. It’s a reminder that when we invest in people, we build a stronger community.

As a community, we celebrate the staff, volunteers, and members who make the Y’s mission possible every single day. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to service and commitment to putting Christian principles into practice.

Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner. I want to take a moment to recognize my mother, Dr. Arletta Perry, who served as the Mistress of Ceremony. Her poise, confidence, and heartfelt delivery set the tone for a truly memorable program. She did a phenomenal job guiding the evening with grace and professionalism which reflects her lifelong commitment to excellence and service.

The theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” was both eclectic and appropriate. It reminded us that progress doesn’t happen by chance. Progress happens when people make a conscious decision to act, even when the moment is uncomfortable or uncertain. The phrase, originally spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., challenges each of us to resist complacency and recognize that the issues facing our communities like justice, equality, and education require immediate attention and definitive leadership.

Judge Everett Mitchell embodied that spirit with a message that was both passionate and mobilizing. His words called us to lead with courage, to serve with conviction, and to believe that transformation begins when we move with urgency and purpose. His presence reminded us that faith and action must go hand in hand. As Judge Mitchell said “I’m not crazy, I’m just like Judge Mitchell!”

Thank you to the NAACP for hosting such an outstanding event and for continuing to be a force for justice and empowerment in Racine and beyond. I’m truly looking forward to all that lies ahead in the coming year as we meet this moment together.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the send off event for Willow Newell, Miss Wisconsin, as she prepares to compete in the Miss America pageant. Meeting and speaking with Willow was truly an honor.

As the first Black woman to hold the Miss Wisconsin crown, Willow is a history maker. Her journey is bigger than a title. It is a powerful reminder to every black and brown girl that their dreams are valid, their voices matter, and their presence can shape history.

For our community here in Racine, Willow’s story is a beacon of hope. She reflects the resilience, beauty, and brilliance of our city. Willow serves as an inspiration to the next generation of leaders and dreamers.

On behalf of Racine, we stand proudly behind Willow as she takes the Miss America stage. We are with you every step of the way, and no matter the outcome, you have already made us proud.
