Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner. I want to take a moment to recognize my mother, Dr. Arletta Perry, who served as the Mistress of Ceremony. Her poise, confidence, and heartfelt delivery set the tone for a truly memorable program. She did a phenomenal job guiding the evening with grace and professionalism which reflects her lifelong commitment to excellence and service.
The theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” was both eclectic and appropriate. It reminded us that progress doesn’t happen by chance. Progress happens when people make a conscious decision to act, even when the moment is uncomfortable or uncertain. The phrase, originally spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., challenges each of us to resist complacency and recognize that the issues facing our communities like justice, equality, and education require immediate attention and definitive leadership.
Judge Everett Mitchell embodied that spirit with a message that was both passionate and mobilizing. His words called us to lead with courage, to serve with conviction, and to believe that transformation begins when we move with urgency and purpose. His presence reminded us that faith and action must go hand in hand. As Judge Mitchell said “I’m not crazy, I’m just like Judge Mitchell!”
Thank you to the NAACP for hosting such an outstanding event and for continuing to be a force for justice and empowerment in Racine and beyond. I’m truly looking forward to all that lies ahead in the coming year as we meet this moment together.
