"I'm a science nerd... I'm just not that creative."

If I had a dollar every time I heard this, I would be a rich woman. People tend to think that science and art are opposite ends of the human experience, but I have been able to tap deeper into my creativity because of my scientific research background.

After earning a master's degree in biomedical science from the University of Edinburgh and working for over a decade in cancer research, I am now designing quilt patterns inspired by some of my favorite books and creating beginner-friendly quilt block kits for the very people who think they're "just not that creative."

It seems like a complete shift right?

But, both careers have allowed me to explore the world around me in deep and enriching ways. While I was able to dive really deep into the basic components that create life in scientific research, I am able to discover beauty, patterns, and awe in the natural world with quilting.

If you have found a way to explore the world around you, give this reel a like.

Maybe more science nerds will see how easy it is to get started on exploring their own creativity. Who know? Maybe it will shed some light on the meaning of life.

Yeah, I spent more screentime on this than I would have liked.

It's so hard to step away from my phone when I am needing social proof in this digital age.

However, I adore sitting down, screen-less, and enjoying simple things in life. And, I really wanted to share that.

Whether it's quilting, reading, drawing, going to markets, travelling, or even garment making, I cherish the time I have that doesn't require a screen.

Like, share, save.

Do all the things so that other people will see this post and be able to experience the bliss of an analog life.

The amount of sobbing selfies I send my friends should be embarrassing, but we're all book nerds. Instead of judging they ask for the book recommendation 🤣

So, I decided to share the books that have made me sob...like ugly cry. Like snot dribbling down face sob. Too much? Well, just wanted to let you know what you're getting into.

Okay, here's 10 books that have made me cry.

I'm still sobbing after reading Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

You know that feeling you get when a book sticks with you long after you read the last page?

My soul held too tight to these characters, so I made sure to not let them go.

Instead, I pulled some cover colors, setting, a small detail from the cover and stitched it into something I could treasure forever.

Because stories like this deserve more than just a spot on a shelf.
They deserve to be felt.

Tell me, what book would you turn into a quilt block?

May is here and so is a new challenge!

Every month showcases a different theme and the challenge is to find a book with that theme depicted on the cover. Once you've read the book, make a quilt block.

You can use your favorite quilt block pattern or use the one that is specifically designed for the theme.

May is for eyewear and here is a look at the eyewear quilt block for May!

Can you guess which novel inspired this block? Hint, it's a contemporary summer romance by the "queen of romance."

Now that you've found me and you have the awesome idea to make a quilt block to match the books you read (hello creative book log!), I've got some tips for you.

Three things to remember when choosing coordinating fabrics:

1) Use the book as a guide for what colors to choose. Editors and illustrators have designed the books so that the colors are cohesive and are pleasing to look at. Since the work of coordinating colors has already been done, you just need to match the color of the fabric to the color on the book cover.

2) Remember the style of the prints. Pairing florals with geometric shapes is usually a good idea. Florals + florals may be too many florals (trust me...I've learned this mistake the hard way). You can also add in a solid or a fabric that "looks" solid when you're holding it up about 10 feet away.

3) In this case, size matters. Choosing fabrics with the same size prints can overwhelm the viewer's brain (I.e. you). I'll take a guess that when/if this happens you may just put the project up and tell yourself you're just not creative enough (spoiler alert: you are creative). If there are too many small prints then it looks way too busy and there is nowhere for the eye (and brain) to rest. If there are too many large prints, there is nothing "anchoring" the prints and your brain may think they'll float away (again, I've tried and it's trippy).

I can't wait to see the quilt blocks you make!

Tell me in the comments what book you'd like to turn into a quilt block.
