The EcoVillage broadly defines sustainability to include everything from agriculture and energy consumption, to transportation and recycling. The EcoVillage provides unique experiences allowing students to lead, serve, create, problem-solve and engage in complex issues facing the energy and environmental challenges of society. Last Friday 10 EcoVillage students helped NC State's Waste Reduction & Recycling power-wash over 365 WE Recycle bins that are placed in the tailgating parking sections for Fall football games. These bins have to be cleaned in the Spring and stored over the summer months before getting placed out again in August for football season to start all over again! This cleaning was traditionally handled by one or two Waste Reduction employees, and it used to take DAYS to complete. Thanks to EcoVillage students, all of the bins and their lids were washed and stacked in about 4 hours! Thanks EcoVillagers!

A small group of EcoVillagers will be departing for Boston early tomorrow morning! The schedule is jam-packed full of sustainability in that historic city. Among the many itinerary items are: New England Aquarium, Walden Pond, a brown bag lunch with the City's Department of Environment & Energy, campus sustainability tours of Harvard, Boston College, and Boston Architectural College, and of course the Freedom Trail, just to name a few. Pictures soon to come!

02/26/2014

On Friday EcoVillagers helped to paint the design on the 2 Pizza Box Composting Pilot Project bins with NC State Waste Reduction & Recycling! The bins are set to be rolled out and in-use on March 3rd. Pizza boxes, pizza slices, paper plates, and paper napkins are the only items that should be thrown in these bins! Plastic silverware, foam/plastic plates, plastic sauce packages, and plastic pizza stands should NOT be thrown in these bins, as they go directly to the composting plant that all NCSU Dining food waste goes to! This is the first step to getting composting for the residence halls on campus, and the EcoVillage is proud to be helping with this important pilot program!

02/21/2014

A shout out to the prospective Park Scholars & Environmental Science program students who just came and had a tour of the EcoVillage Office and Bragaw Residence Hall! Good luck with your scholarships and we hope to see you all as residents of the EcoVillage next year!

16 EcoVillagers participated in the 2014 Krispy Kreme Challenge: 6 Challegers and 10 Casual Runners. 4 Challengers ran all 5 miles and ate all 12 doughnuts in under an hour, thereby successfully completing the Krispy Kreme Challenge! The first ever EcoVillage Team for the Krispy Kreme Challenge Champion finished the challenge in 36 minutes and 41 seconds, which is where the winning time will remain until another EcoVillager completes the KKC as a Challenger. And the final stats are in! We are so proud that ALL 16 EcoVillage Team for the Krispy Kreme participants finished the race on Saturday! 4 of our "Challengers" actually ate all 12 doughnuts and ran all 5 miles in under 1 hour, thereby successfully completing THE Krispy Kreme Challenge! Taylor G. placed 30th out of 5,189 KKC Challengers and was the first EcoVillager to cross the finish line after having completed the Challenge, thereby making him our first ever EcoVillage Team for the Krispy Kreme Challenge Champion! We are so proud of you all! Special thanks to all the non-participating EcoVillagers who came out to support their fellow EcoVillagers in the race! It was a delicious day.
