The Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program is a centralized housing rehabilitation, reconstruction or replacement program that will prioritize low-to-moderate income families with seniors aged 62 and older, children, and/or disabled household members impacted by Hurricane Helene in the following 29 counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg (28214), Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin and Yancey. 🚨 Reminder: Renew NC Community Infrastructure Program applications are open until September 16, 2026.

This is a competitive grant program that provides funding for infrastructure projects, linked to Hurricane Helene’s impacts or mitigation set-asides, that will help impacted communities in western North Carolina become more resilient to current and future natural hazards.

🚧 Framing a New Beginning in Glade Valley!: Construction is officially underway on a brand-new home made possible by the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program.

Designed with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, this is a resilient new home being built by general contractor Byrdson Services, LLC. It's also an important step forward in the recovery of a family in Alleghany County and the long-term efforts across Western North Carolina following the impact of Hurricane Helene.

🏠 Major News for Western NC Affordable Housing Recovery! 👇

Governor Josh Stein, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency have announced $69+ million in federal disaster recovery funding to build 828 new affordable rental units across 10 key projects -- including one developed by Housing Assistance WNC -- in Western North Carolina.

This investment will ensure families recovering from Hurricane Helene gain access to safe, resilient rental housing guaranteed to remain budget-friendly for at least the next 30 years.

Key Breakdown of the Funding:

- 828 New Rental Units: 10 multi-family housing developments awarded gap-financing loans through the Rental Production Program for Disaster Recovery.

- 10 Impacted Counties: Development projects will take place in Ashe, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cleveland, Haywood, Henderson, Rutherford, Transylvania, and Watauga counties.

- Long-Term Security: Rent restrictions and income limits will protect low- and moderate-income households for decades to come.

🚨 NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Renew NC has launched the Workforce Housing for Ownership (WHFO) Program! Submit your application online at commercerecovery.nc.gov! 🏠

Backed by $53.38 million in CDBG-DR funding, this initiative expands affordable homeownership across HUD-identified Most Impacted and Distressed (MID) counties to support Hurricane Helene recovery and remedy long-standing housing production shortages.

By focusing on workforce households earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), the WHFO Program ensures the workers who serve Western NC every day can afford to remain rooted in the communities they call home.

Program Highlights:

- Eligible Areas: HUD-identified MID counties across Western NC (Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cleveland, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, Mecklenburg (ZIP code 28214 only), McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey counties.)

- Eligible Applicants: For-profit/non-profit developers (including CHDOs and CBDOs), CLTs, housing authorities, local governments, and joint ventures.

- Funding: Awards range from $2M to $5M per project.

- Application Window: Open now through September 25, 2026, at 5:00 PM EST.

: Last week, a longtime Black Mountain resident received the keys to her brand-new home provided by the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program!

"I really appreciate what Renew has done for me. I didn't want to see my house go, but now that it's gone and I'm used to the idea, [this is] a beautiful home," she said. "I'm just really happy about it."

Built by James W. Turner Construction, this 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house marks an exciting new chapter for a homeowner who lived in her previous home for nearly 40 years.

Renew NC is North Carolina's long-term disaster recovery initiative, dedicated to helping families impacted by Hurricane Helene move into safe, secure housing across western North Carolina.

🏠🔑 : A brand-new start for a father and daughter in Rutherford County!

Congressman Tim Moore recently joined Renew NC to tour a completed new home for a local family rebuilding their lives after Hurricane Helene. The highlight of the day was seeing his little girl’s excitement as she turned the key to unlock the front door to her new home for the very first time! 💙

Built by general contractor BHL Federal , the two-bedroom, two-bathroom house provides this family with a safe, secure, and resilient place to call their own.

Provided through the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program, this project is part of North Carolina’s long-term disaster recovery effort dedicated to helping families across western North Carolina rebuild and move back into safe housing after Helene.
