Attention UBC members,

It has come to our attention that scammers are trying to get personal information from union members by calling them and claiming to be with a pension trust fund. The scamming caller typically tells the member that they need his or her social security number or SIN in Canada, date of birth, bank account number, and other information under the guise of issuing pension benefits.

Authorized staff from a trust fund or union should never reach out to you and ask you to provide personal information, such as social security numbers and birthdates, over the phone. They might ask you to confirm information they provide but should never ask you for that information.

If you are ever unsure about whether the person calling is from the entity they claim to be from, you should let them know that you will call them back using the published phone number for them. Do not give them your personal information.

You can find a directory of trust funds and regional councils on the UBC's website: For Our Members - United Brotherhood of Carpenters

In solidarity,

The UBC Communications Team

Gov. considers bill that would eliminate premium pay on three holidays

These small “takes” are slowly eroding the base of the common worker. Although this does not directly affect our current collective bargaining agreement, this will in time affect ALL workers.

That bill would add the first of the year, as well as Columbus Day and Veterans Day, to the list of holidays for which premium pay will be phased out.

UPP Cycle Ending

The current cycle of the Union Participation Program will be ending December 31. Member participation is the lifeblood of off-site union building. It holds our industry accountable, builds bonds in our communities and leads to results that generate work-hours throughout our council. Every rank-and-file member who has participated in a UPP event has contributed to our union's success. Thank you!

Members who have not participated in this cycle will have plenty of opportunities to get involved in the next 10 weeks. In addition to election and local legislative activities, the weather has been holding out well enough for local unions to continue donating labor to community projects. Holiday food and toy drives will be ramping up as we approach Thanksgiving and the December holidays.

For political action, available UPP opportunities include labor-to-labor calls that can be done from home (call your hall to learn more). The union will also be doing events in the battleground state of Maine and New Hampshire with Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Congresswoman Annie Kuster and others. Contact your local union or the political team at [email protected] to learn about these and other political activity.

For other UPP events, contact your local union.

While we will not be able to hold a "Carpenters Appreciation Night," there will still be drawings and awards for members who have completed their UPP obligation and prizes for members who have done a significant number of events.

Due to limited in-person events over the past year and a half, the class of 2020 and the class of 2021 were honored and celebrated together at the Millbury Training Facility on Sunday. Congratulations to Local 346 Sister Rebecca Orie for being awarded the first annual Amelia Phinney Scholarship given to a female apprentice who exemplifies Amelia‘s qualities of commitment to excellence, dedication to learning, and consistent support to those around her. "Like Amelia, Rebecca is truly a successful Carpenter," said Southeast New England Regional Manager Dennis Lassige at the Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony on Sunday. "Rebecca’s greatest attributes are those of which any and all great union carpenters possess: love for the craft, open-mindedness, professionalism, and commitment to our union. She is a shining example of talent and professionalism to ALL carpenters in the field." Rebecca has proved to be a quick learner, serious and most importantly, ambitious. She is an integral part of the SIB Committee in Southeast New England and has stepped up to her new role as the steward for Skanska at the South Coast Rail project in Fall River, a $140MM project. Congratulations Sister Orie and we wish you continued success in your career. Sunday, August 8th marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of our dear friend, John Manning. John worked as a Business Representative for New England Carpenters Union Local 346 and was a humble, talented and effective leader who was dedicated to protecting members and helping bring a voice to the unrepresented. Manning joined the former Local 535 in 2000 and worked as a carpenter and superintendent on a variety of projects throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. As an avid fan of the New England Patriots, being able to work on Gillette Stadium in Foxboro made him particularly proud. He became a council representative in 2017 and while he may have felt more comfortable on a jobsite and a union hall than anywhere else, he worked effectively with political candidates and elected officials to promote the goals of the Brotherhood. Today, and every day, we fondly remember our Brother John. Anyone who wishes to share remembrances in the comments are encouraged to do so.
Friday is for the Members!! Here's a great shot of New England Carpenters Union Local 346 Brother Frank Baxter working at the Chapman Middle School in Weymouth. CARPENTERS ENDORSE LYNCH FOR RE-ELECTION TO CONGRESS The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters has endorsed Congressman Stephen F. Lynch for re-election to the United States House of Representatives from the 8th Massachusetts District. Joe Byrne, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the regional body of the Carpenters union, said Congressman Lynch has been a long-time and excellent advocate for union carpenters, one the union doesn’t want to lose. “Congressman Lynch has been our champion in Washington, supporting the federal prevailing wage, protecting our pensions and defending our right to organize. He has always stood up for working families and we need him now more than ever.” The union believes Congressman Lynch’s roots are part of what has made him an excellent Representative. “As a former leader of the Ironworkers union, Congressman Lynch has a unique understanding of our work and how important the construction industry is to our local economy,” said Richard Pedi, NASRCC Regional Manager for Boston. “We are proud to support Congressman Lynch because we can always count on him to support our members.” As congress continues to work on immediate responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and the longer-term future, voices and perspectives like Lynch’s help ensure that union carpenters and other people working in the trades will be remembered and considered. “We need to re-elect Congressman Lynch because he is championing efforts to pass a comprehensive federal infrastructure bill that will employ thousands of union members and stimulate the national economy,” said Dennis Lassige, NASRCC Regional Manager for Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “He understands how important it is for workers and our communities to rebuild the nation’s transportation infrastructure, repair our outdated schools, and invest in a building a future with renewable energy.” carpenters local 327 Carpenters Local 328 New England Carpenters Union Local 346 Local 56 Piledrivers Boston MA Local Union 2168 Floorcoverers of Massachusetts
