Good morning, recycling fans! We are open and accepting all recyclables today.

♻️ Pro Recycling Tip of the Day: the photo on the left shows corrugated cardboard. The photo on the right is paperboard. Paperboard goes in with our “mixed paper,” which includes newspaper, office paper, magazines (covers off, please!), egg cartons, and so on. If it isn’t corrugated, it’s paper! Sorting your recyclables before you come to the Center saves time for you and for us.

We arrived this morning to find this pile of stuff outside our gate. Please don’t be these people!! The trash bags were full of bubble wrap, which we are unable to recycle. The dumpster outside of our gate was also filled with cardboard. That dumpster belongs to Beartooth Industries and is NOT for use by the Recycling Center or our members.

We apologize for the uncertainty and inconvenience we’re all dealing with in the face of COVID. Thank you to our great members and volunteers for rolling with the punches and helping us accomplish our mission of reducing the amount of waste headed to landfills! We are open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10-2.

11/28/2020

Good morning! We are OPEN from 10-2 today. We will be accepting tin and scrap metal, aluminum, glass, plastics 1&2, and compost. We will not be accepting cardboard and paper.

11/20/2020

The Recycling Center will be closed Saturday, Nov. 21 and Wednesday, Nov 25.

Due to a possible COVID-19 exposure and resulting quarantines, we will be unable to provide recycling services this week. We plan to reopen on Saturday, November 28. At that time, we will be accepting aluminum, tin and scrap metal, glass, compost, and plastics #1 and #2. We will not be accepting cardboard or paper, as to limit the number of staff and volunteers in the shop. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will continue to do our best to find creative solutions.

We hope to be able to continue to accept cardboard from our business members outside of regular operating hours. Please keep an eye on our page for updated information, or sign up for updates straight to your inbox by emailing [email protected].

You are the best! I recently joined and made my first trip yesterday. I did not know the routine so had unacceptable icky plastic, tin and aluminum cans mixed together and tons of glass. Everyone was kind and patient and explained the policies with a. "no worries." Thank you for a huge benefit to the community and for being so nice and understanding to a rookie. Will do better next time!
Is the recycling center open today 5/23?
Lousy internet, so it's hard for me to look at past posts, so I might have missed something. How long is the recycling center closed for? Thanks.
There's still a lot you can do to support recycling and the goal of a waste-free community, even though we are all practicing social distancing! Today is DAY ONE of our thirty day virtual challenge. Each day we'll post a prompt for how you can support community recycling and each other. Play along by posting comments, pictures, or recording your efforts in a journal. At the end of the 30 days, you'll have a chance to win a $25 gift card to PREROGATIvE Kitchen, plus one of your choice: - a beeswax wrap (replaces saran wrap!) - a sourdough starter - a cup of red wiggler worms to get your compost going - a jar of pickled beets (YUM) It will be fun!! OK - here's your prompt for today: Recycle Red Lodge's mission is to reduce the waste we create in our community. Our vision is to eventually become a zero-waste place! From the perspective of your daily life, what does a zero-waste community look like to you? Post your ideas in the comments, and please like this post, so others can see it and participate.
Is the recycle center open on Thursday, December 26th? Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Is the recycle center open tomorrow? Thursday December 26th? Thank you and happy holidays!!
We're supposed to separate tin from aluminum but I could not tell the difference. With Google to the rescue, I now use the magnet test: "Check your metal by applying the magnet test again if you suspect that the metal is aluminum. Aluminum and tin can be mistaken for one another, but tin will stick to a magnet while aluminum will not. Tin also has a similar color to aluminum but shows a slightly duller finish."
Interesting read. Perhaps get your drinking water from the tap and get your beer in a growler?
A few weeks back, when I found out that Red Lodge Recycling would be taking #1 and #2 plastic again, I was cautiously elated. Since losing our plastics recycling, I and many others have educated ourselves about the world’s recycling issues including the enormity of the impact from China refusing to take the world’s recyclables and trash, starting in 2018. Perhaps worse than the communities that lost or cut back their recycling programs were the ones who, unbeknownst to their public, continued “recycling” with their recycled items simply finding their way into landfills, the ocean, or being burned since there were no longer buyers. People with the best of intentions were all in the the same situation whether we realized it or not- both those still diligently cleaning their plastics for the blue bin, as well as those of us feeling that pang of guilt from having to throw them in the trash when we lost our program. In general, less than 9% of plastics that are produced are actually recycled. And in the past few years, even much of what we collectively put in the recycling bins sadly did not find its way to being recycled.

Some of our local trash companies- and so many more across the country- were guilty of not disclosing the reality of the situation to their clients. I believe that a lot of these companies were not being deliberately dishonest, they were simply scrambling to figure out what to do, hoping that the international market would be restored in short order. It now seems apparent that it will not. So, here we are. Can we be excited about plastics recycling coming back to Red Lodge? What can really be recycled domestically? Where do our recyclables actually end up? Thanks to the transparency of those running our recycling program, I reached out to the company Earth First Aid in Billings, with whom our local program is working. I had the pleasure of speaking to a man named Scott, who enthusiastically educated me on the industry, the realities and logistics of recycling, and the endpoint for the items that you and I put in the bins in our community. I wanted to share what we discussed, because I think many of us have the same questions. Scott explained to me that with many of our recyclables, Earth First Aid works directly to contract with mills and processing places for the materials. Plastics are different. Because of the nature of the plastics market, brokers are used to find buyers for plastics #1 and #2. These plastics are pelletized and shipped to purchasers across the country, including for example, some in states like Illinois, Nebraska, California, Oregon, and Washington. In the past, brokers also found buyers abroad, but now this is much less common. Plastics #1 and #2 are the only plastics that can be recycled, they are the only plastics that have ever been recycled. Prior to 2018, China was buying bulk plastic from the US only to remove the more lucrative #1 and #2 plastics and dump or burn the #3-7 plastics. This is how, even though the majority of Americans didn’t know it, we have been contributing personally to the horrible trash problem in Asia and the Pacific Ocean, although we live far from those places. Anyone who has ever recycled #3-7 plastics has just made trash for somewhere else. It is heartbreaking to find these things out, but empowering to see the reality. Only when we know something is broken can we give it our attention and fix it. Plastics #1 and #2 are used to make fleece, yoga pants, carpet, tile, bottles, etc. If you can think of ways to recycle or use up #3-7 plastics, you will have struck gold. There is an endless unwanted supply of these, and they are now filling our domestic landfills at a dizzying pace.

Scott mentioned that he would be happy to talk to our community about recycling and trash. He is an incredible resource for this information, and after speaking with him I felt not only reassured about knowing that our plastics #1 and #2 are in good hands and actually being used domestically, but I also understood the CRITICAL nature of eliminating the other types of plastics. THANK YOU, Red Lodge Recycling, for all of your efforts! And thank you, individuals in this community for doing all that you can to reduce and reuse in your lives. Every choice we make has an impact.
We missed the bags at IGA! Will there be more there? Or do we get them at RLR? Thanks!
ATTENTION RECYCLES INDIVIDUALS Because it is going to be below 0 on Wednesday the 6th and possibly the 9th we will not be opening the recycling center. Call 446-1722 if you have any questions.
