We love the new bike racks downtown! Congratulations to The City of Redding and everyone involved in making this happen!
Shasta Living Streets, K2 Properties and The City of Redding have been working hard to bring more publicly-available bicycle parking to the community. The efforts have paid off! Brand new bike racks have been added to the Downtown scene at Market Center, providing support for community members and business owners alike.
These racks were funded by an Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) grant awarded to the City of Redding and K2 Development for Market Center Housing and the associated transportation improvements to help create a more vibrant, walkable and bikeable Downtown. They were designed by Russell Architecture & Design Studio (@radstudioredding).
Why is public bike parking so important? We spoke with Anne Thomas, Executive Director of Shasta Living Streets to find out.
“Public Bike Parking improves and enhances Downtown Redding’s liveable streets and public rights-of-way to make biking a safe, viable transportation option for people of all ages, abilities and levels of willingness to mix with automobiles.
It provides an economic advantage to nearby businesses. Studies show that people arriving by bicycle spend more money on average than those traveling by vehicle. Bicyclists have a tendency to spend less per trip but make more frequent trips, and ultimately spend more money.
Bike racks contribute to orderly, usable and enjoyable streets. They are strategically placed away from street furniture, walls and curbs, preventing potential damage to these features.
They increase foot traffic to a place, increasing ‘eyes on the street’ - which means a sense of general security for street users.”
According to Thomas, these new bike racks feature a coating that is built to last. The circular shape provides two points of contact to keep the bikes upright and makes them easy to lock.
These exciting new additions to Downtown come just in time to put them to use for Healthy Shasta 's Cycle September Challenge! Learn more here: https://healthyshasta.org/cycle-september-join-the-challenge/
