We love the new bike racks downtown! Congratulations to The City of Redding and everyone involved in making this happen!

Shasta Living Streets, K2 Properties and The City of Redding have been working hard to bring more publicly-available bicycle parking to the community. The efforts have paid off! Brand new bike racks have been added to the Downtown scene at Market Center, providing support for community members and business owners alike.

These racks were funded by an Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) grant awarded to the City of Redding and K2 Development for Market Center Housing and the associated transportation improvements to help create a more vibrant, walkable and bikeable Downtown. They were designed by Russell Architecture & Design Studio (@radstudioredding).

Why is public bike parking so important? We spoke with Anne Thomas, Executive Director of Shasta Living Streets to find out.

“Public Bike Parking improves and enhances Downtown Redding’s liveable streets and public rights-of-way to make biking a safe, viable transportation option for people of all ages, abilities and levels of willingness to mix with automobiles.

It provides an economic advantage to nearby businesses. Studies show that people arriving by bicycle spend more money on average than those traveling by vehicle. Bicyclists have a tendency to spend less per trip but make more frequent trips, and ultimately spend more money.

Bike racks contribute to orderly, usable and enjoyable streets. They are strategically placed away from street furniture, walls and curbs, preventing potential damage to these features.

They increase foot traffic to a place, increasing ‘eyes on the street’ - which means a sense of general security for street users.”

According to Thomas, these new bike racks feature a coating that is built to last. The circular shape provides two points of contact to keep the bikes upright and makes them easy to lock.

These exciting new additions to Downtown come just in time to put them to use for Healthy Shasta 's Cycle September Challenge! Learn more here: https://healthyshasta.org/cycle-september-join-the-challenge/

☀️🚍 BEACH BUS ☀️🚍

The Beach Bus will serve 3 new stops at Whiskeytown from now until September 4, 2021:

📍 Whiskeytown Visitor Center
📍 Brandy Creek Marina
📍 Kennedy Memorial (S. Shore Drive at Paige Bar Rd.)

And the 2 afternoon trips are moving 1 hour earlier to 3:20 & 5:20 p.m.

The changes will make it easier to visit more places at Whiskeytown—for people to swim, hike, bike, relax, and enjoy the great outdoors 🛶🌳 here in the Shasta Region and reduce your impact on the environment.

And there's no need to pay for gas, parking, or entrance fees! ⛽️

The service changes will also improve connections to RABA 🚌 and other transportation services at the Downtown Transit Center.

After a day at Whiskeytown, Beach Bus passengers now can transfer onto RABA routes that cover the cities of Anderson, Shasta Lake, and Redding.

As a reminder, Beach Bus service is 🆓 FREE 🆓 and it includes access to Whiskeytown.

And there's room for 2 bikes 🚲 onboard.

The Beach Bus now departs the Downtown Transit Center at the following times on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays (excluding holidays) from now until September 4, 2021:

🕘 9:20 a.m.
🕚 11:20 a.m.
🕒 3:20 p.m.
🕔 5:20 p.m.

The Beach Bus makes stops at these locations:

📍 Downtown Transit Center 🌆
📍 Buenaventura Blvd. at Eureka Way
📍 Old Shasta
📍 Whiskeytown Visitor Center 🗺
📍 Brandy Creek Beach ☀️
📍 Brandy Creek Marina ⛵️
📍 Kennedy Memorial (S. Shore Drive at Paige Bar Rd.) 🚵‍♀️

Thank you to our partners for your ongoing collaboration on improving service to Whiskeytown: RABA, @cityofredding, @whiskeytownnra, and @healthyshasta. 🙌

What a wonderful community event to celebrate the new Diestelhorst to Downtown Walking and Biking Trail. The turnout last night was so impressive. Downtown was alive and bustling with activity. We saw tons of people walking and riding on bikes of all shapes and sizes, e-bikes, bikes with training wheels, bike trailers, folding bikes, strollers, scooters, and many other mobility devices. 🚲🦽🛴🛹🎉

It was amazing to see everyone get together to use the new trail, support local businesses, and share in congratulating the community on getting this project completed and building momentum for even more like it. SRTA is happy to have helped The City of Redding to get this project built. This is an exciting time for our community!

Thank you to the City of Redding, Shasta Living Streets, Healthy Shasta, Caltrans District 2, CHP - Redding, The McConnell Foundation, Chain Gang Bike Shop, Woody's Brewing Co., Karline's Restaurant & Bar, Taste & See Creamery, Theory Coffee Roasters, Q97, and everyone else for making the event such a great time. 🙌

That's a lot of people! 🚲

Tonight, we will be at the Caltrans District 2 building on Riverside Drive with Healthy Shasta and more to celebrate the opening of the Diestelhorst to Downtown Walking and Biking Trail. We hear there will be ice cream! 🎉

Congrats to our local partners, neighbors, downtown businesses, and everyone else on getting this project completed.

A 3 mile bike ride takes about 20 minutes. Are you one of over 68,000 Redding residents who lives within 3 miles of the Diestelhorst to Downtown Trail? Why not take your bike out for a spin tonight to enjoy the street party from the Diestelhorst Bridge along the new trail (along Court St, Riverside Drive, Center Street to California St) into downtown Redding? Residents are invited to ride and walk the route while grabbing food, drink, and enjoying live music along the route. Also a drawing for a new bike, thanks to Chain Gang Bike Shop! Come join the fun starting at 7 pm TONIGHT! The Girvan Road Improvement Project has officially entered Stage 3. What does this mean?

Northbound Highway 273 traffic will still be reduced to a single lane, but it will be back over the original alignment, on the new roadway section. The planned right turn lane will remain blocked until the crossing arms are modified by the Railroad.

Due to some mechanical issues relating to the Railroad crossing, we will NOT be opening the lanes for traffic to cross the tracks yet. The crossing will most likely remain closed for the duration of this month, subject to change based on the Railroad performing a portion of their work.

Based on this, the RABA route along East Side Road will also likely not resume until the railroad crossing is operational. The temporary pedestrian shuttle will remain in operation while the crossing remains closed.

Please continue to slow for the cone to protect construction workers and yourself in all areas where road work is being conducted.

🚧 Construction Alert 🚧

A northern portion of the California-Market St. alley closes to cars starting today to allow for work to be completed on the Block 7 project. This means we're one step closer to more exciting development projects opening up downtown.

Very importantly, pedestrian access on the sidewalk will not be affected. And the Shasta College parking lot is accessible if you go south on Market and west on Butte.

Please keep an eye out for signage and guidance from construction crews. See this image for a map of the changes, and more details from The McConnell Foundation are available here: https://buff.ly/2SmVn8i

Take a look at this article from the California Association of Councils of Governments about the service which we have been working on with state and local partners. See you onboard in 2021!

Redding was founded as a railroad hub. Only these days, you wouldn’t know it. It’s still the kind of place where people from nearby rural towns come to shop or see the doctor. But it’s no longer the draw it once was for catching the train to points elsewhere. That’s not because people don’...
