News Release: Regional Law Enforcement Officials Urge Parents to Be Aware of Teenager’s Online Presence

A critical and timely message from Fredericksburg Police Chief Layton, King George County Sheriff Giles, Spotsylvania County Sheriff Harris, Stafford County Sheriff Decatur, and City of Fredericksburg Sheriff Foster.

Smartphones have forever changed how we communicate, and while there are many benefits to having a small computer in the palm of your hand, there are also many negatives, especially for teenagers.

Across the region, law enforcement agencies have seen how one social media post or video can quickly spiral out of control, resulting in violence, fights, and even homicide. The trajectory for our youth when they engage in this type of online behavior is detrimental and affects their family, friends, classmates, teams, etc.

All of us are committed to keeping our youth safe. Still, we need you, the parents and caregivers, to help us by being aware and monitoring your children's digital footprint and talking to them about the ramifications of a loaded social media post.

While you may not be able to monitor all of your child's activities, there are things you can do to prevent and protect your child from harmful digital behavior:

• Monitor their social media sites, apps, and browsing history
• Review or reset your child's phone location and privacy settings
• Follow or friend your teen on social media sites or have another trusted adult follow them
• Establish rules about appropriate digital behavior, content, and apps
• Know your child's user names and passwords for email and social media
• Install a digital monitoring app or software on your child's phone that restricts content, blocks domains, and allows you to view your child's online activity, including social media, without looking at your child's device every day
• Stay up-to-date on the latest apps, social media platforms, and digital slang used by children and teens

For more information on how to talk with your child about their online choices or information on the impacts of social media on youth, visit StopBullying.gov

We are grateful for no serious injuries, .

: On Aug. 27, a officer was driving a marked police SUV when their cruiser impacted a pickup truck in area of the PW Pkwy & Wellington Rd just before 1:30 am. The officer was traveling on the PW Pkwy with a green signal to proceed through the intersection. The other driver ran their red signal on Wellington and entered the intersection, crossing in front of the officer’s vehicle. The officer, traveling at speed for the Parkway, had seconds to react and attempted to avoid the collision; however, the front of the cruiser impacted the back panel of the pickup. The impact and subsequent maneuvering post-crash caused the police SUV to overturn. The other driver was arrested for DUI. Thankfully only minor injuries were reported.

Vets' Retreat Virginia, Inc. congratulates Captain Hill on recent promotion with the Fredericksburg Police Department. We appreciate your work in many roles and responsibilities, since 2006. Good luck to you as the Patrol Division Supervisor, and please be in touch.

Please join us in congratulating Crystal Hill for her recent promotion to Captain. She will supervise the Patrol Division.

Captain Hill joined our agency as a Communications Officer in 2006. Although she loved her role as a 911 operator, she came from a family of law enforcement officers and always wanted to follow in their footsteps. She graduated from the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy in 2008. As a patrol officer, she served as a Field Training Officer and a Patrol Rifle Operator. She was promoted to Corporal in 2013 and then to Sergeant in 2014, where she was assigned to the evening shift. Between 2014 and 2022, she held many roles, which included Patrol Division Squad Supervisor, Evidence Supervisor, Community Services Supervisor, and Recruiting Supervisor. In 2020, she was promoted to Lieutenant, where she served as the day shift Watch Commander.

Captain Hill has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. She is a proud wife and mother who enjoys camping and traveling with her family.

What’s everyone got going on this weekend???
Anyone here from or currently living in Central Virginia?
Happy Veterans Day to all of you heroes out there. Odds are that I’ve never met you, but know that I am always here for you. We’ve probably never served together, but I’m proud to call you my brothers and my sisters. I hope you all had a great day and if not, I hope you were able to reflect on and see the incredible value and worth that you have to us.
How’s everyone doing? The Marine Corps birthday is around the corner, Veterans Day is almost upon us, and my Buffalo Sabres are beginning their annual slide. Yep, must be Fall.
On I would like to thank each and every one of you. Just the other day, my wife broke down on the side of I-64 and one of VSP’s finest Troopers stayed parked behind her to protect her and our youngest son until I was able to get to her to swap vehicles and wait for a tow. I’m honored to know so many first responders and to work with them on a daily basis. Thank you.
Condolences to the family of former Bland County Sheriff and retired Virginia State Police Master Trooper Tom Roseberry. Huge loss of a great man, with a great family, from a great area. Till Valhalla Sir.
Anyone else spend considerable time in a bomb dump? Surely there are some AMMO troops or Ordies here.
How many different FOP Lodges are represented here?
Are there a lot of first responders present and accounted for here?
Where’s everyone from? I’m in Louisa County but grew up out in Bland County. Maybe we can start to see where we might have “roving bands” of us out there. 💣💣💣
Our Post has teamed with Tech For Troops & Vets' Retreat Virginia, Inc. to make a laptop computer and wi-fi connection available for VFW members’ and community Veterans’ business use during our normal operating hours. Thank you for allowing us to provide another resource to those who’ve served.
Who here is from the Hampton Roads area?????
