Hey folks! I wanted to send a quick little message out to let you know about some of the things that we have coming up in the month of October. In addition to our usual "First Fridays" event on October 4th, we're having our regular Thursday evening "Supporting your Meditation Practice" events on October 10th and 24th, both beginning at 7:30PM.
ALSO, however, I'm really excited to announce that beginning on October, we're hosting a monthly extended duration (45 minute) silent sitting for meditation practitioners. We've heard from a number of folks in our community that they are looking for opportunities for silent meditation with a community of supporters. If this sounds like you, here we go! The first one will be held on Thursday, October 17th from 7:30PM to 8:30PM. Not a lot of talk, not a guided meditation, space being held for you to practice your practice with the opportunity for Q&A at the end. All of these opportunities are listed in the Events, and you can find them also on Meetup and, of course, on the NovaPrana website. Here is the condensed schedule for the month:
Friday, October 4 - 7:00PM to 9:00PM
First Fridays : October - Forgiveness
Thursday, October 10 - 7:30PM to 8:30PM
Vipassana / Mindfulness Meditation Skill-building: Supporting your Practice
Thursday, October 17 - 7:30PM to 8:30PM
Noble Silence Sitting for Practitioners
Thursday, October 24 - 7:30PM to 8:30PM
Vipassana / Mindfulness Meditation Skill-building : Supporting your Practice
One more thing... the FIRST issue of the NovaPrana Newsletter is coming out in the beginning of October! If you want to get that in your email inbox, head over to the website - www.novaprana.org - and sign up. Issue #1 will hit the inboxes in just a couple of days!
Thanks Everybody! I hope to see you soon.
May the work I do here be the cause and conditions of my own awakening, and the awakening of all beings everywhere! First issue of the NovaPrana newsletter is about to blast off of the presses (electronically, of course!) If you wanna get in on it and see what we have cooking this month as soo as it comes out, head over to the NovaPrana website - www.novaprana.org - and sign up for the newsletter. We'd love to send it your way!!

First Friday : September date and topic announced! We would love to see you there on September 6th, 6:00PM.
Fri, Sep 6, 2019, 6:00 PM: "O Nobly Born, O you of glorious origins, remember your radiant true nature, the essence of mind. Trust it. Return to it. It is home."—The Tibetan Book of the DeadWho am I?
Hey folks! There are a lot of mindfulness apps out there that you can download, as well as an abundance of podcasts, YouTube videos, and websites that offer instruction and information. This is fantastic, and a super way to get started on establishing your meditation practice! Sometimes, however, you might get have the urge to meet some other folks who are working on their practice as well, or maybe you just have some questions or issues about your practice that you would like to talk about.
If you have questions about your practice, want to interact with a community, or just want to have the opportunity to meditate with a group, you're welcome to join us at 7:30PM on the Thursday of the second and fourth week of each month at the Brennan Institute for Mind-Body Healing in Reston for a group meditation opportunity that is entirely focused around strengthening your practice. This is vipassana meditation 101 for everyone... no experience necessary, and those with a 20 year practice are welcome to join! There is not a fee associated with this but we do accept donations. We're here for you and your practice!
I hope to see you soon, and we want to be there for you to help you practice your practice! Our next meeting is Thursday, July 25 at 7:30PM.
What does it mean to live your life as your best self in the chaos of Fairfax county (or anywhere, for that matter!), where traffic is bad, folks are in a hurry, and often the niceties of community living are lost in the shuffle? It turns out it goes beyond the superficial and vague direction of "meditate and be nice to people." Although being nice and meditating are critically important in my biased opinion, there are actually clear prescriptive directions that have been passed down to us on how to cultivate the internal sense of being that fosters the outward expression of who your best self is. How do you be nice to people, and how to I find it within myself to do so?
These four facets, or properties, which you can develop within yourself which results in this niceness are referred to as the "Divine Abodes," the Immeasurables, or, in the original language the brahma viharas - they are Loving-kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity. Starting this evening, and for each third Wednesday of the month for the next couple of months, we're going to practice the practice of developing these states. How do you practice the development of loving-kindness in yourself? What about compassion, and how do I develop that? It's one thing to understand these four states of being, it's another thing altogether to cultivate them within yourself. Let's get some practice! Tonight, we’ll begin with practicing the first two – Loving-Kindness and Compassion, and next month on August 21 at Spaces we’ll cover Joy and Equanimity.
Where: Spaces Wiehle Metro (meet in the lobby)
When: This evening from 7:00PM to 8:15PM
Topic: Loving-Kindness and Compassion
Of course, we have our twice monthly dedicated sitting practice at the Brennan Institute for Mind-Body Healing from 7:30 to 8:30PM on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, and I’d love to see you there as well to work on your personal meditation practice. You can find more information about these, and all of our events, on our website at www.novaprana.org. I hope to see you soon!
“...there is a regimen of daily and ongoing trainings and disciplines to help you learn and practice healthy ways of being. These practices return us to our innate wisdom and compassion, and they direct us toward freedom.”
Freedom is not a life free from feeling and experiencing pain. Rather, it is the ability to feel, fully and in its totality, the pain and sorrow that arises from living in this world, to simply be with that pain, and for that to be ok. Doing that takes grit, guts, and courage, and the ability to grow and cultivate that ability is found on the cushion, in your breath, in your body, and within your own self. Making space for that... that's the practice. That's all there is, and that is what you find in meditation and a mindful way of being.. a life filled with loving kindness, compassion, joy in the success of yourself and others, and equanimity. That is freedom.
"There is a difference between listening and waiting for your turn to speak."
-- Simon Sinek
For many of us, the idea of "communication" is synonymous with speaking. For some who practice this more rigorously, body language, as well as the projection of other non-verbal cues, come into play as a component of our message. This is only one side of the communication equation, however, and all is for nothing if we don't study the art of listening.
At First Fridays - June, we'll discuss the art of active listening, talk about the importance of establishing ground rules for productive discussion, learn about ways to incorporate a mindful approach to difficult or challenging conversations, and even get a little practice in mindful listening. This also includes how to apply these concepts to the act of listening to yourself.
Hey folks! We have a great lineup of June events on deck, and we'd lone to see you there. All this starts tomorrow evening (June 7th), from 6 to 8pm at the Brennan Institute for Mind-Body Healing with First Fridays - June! Hear about it in the video, along with our other June events at the Brennan Institute and at Spaces Reston Station!
See you soon!
Hi folks! Are you looking for a mid-week recharge? Are you looking for ways to get away from your desk for a little while? Do you like to support worthy causes? If so, NovaPrana, along with the Brennan Institute for Mind Body Healing, is happy to invite you to join us on Wednesdays this summer for Free Lunchtime Yoga with Renee West! Sessions are in the lighter, yin style of gentle stretching, and maybe she might throw in a little flow every once in a while. If you don't know Renee, she is a Certified Yoga Instructor with specialized teaching training in Yin Yoga. She completed her 200-hour certification through LifePower at Lifetime Yoga and her Yin training at Beloved Yoga--both in Reston, VA. Renee enjoys yoga vacations that take her to many different parts of this beautiful world. After a successful sales career in the corporate environment, she is excited to share her love and knowledge of yoga with her students. Fun fact - Renee was also a ranked runner in the Washington DC area for many years!
Come check it out. We're suggesting a $10 donation, all of which go directly to the ongoing support of this opportunity. We would love to see you there! Come check it out and see what you think. Why have opportunities for meditation in the workplace? As reported by Greater Good magazine, it benefits in a number of seriously important ways! When surveyed, employees reported the following...
91 percent reported it positively impacted the culture
88 percent would recommend it to a coworker
66 percent said they felt less stress or had improved stress-management capabilities
63 percent are better able manage themselves at work
60 percent reported increased focus and better decision-making skills
52 percent are able to better manage work relationships
46 percent reported increased innovation and creativity
All of these sound like great reasons to initiate, or participate in, meditation opportunities in the workplace. After all, the workplace is the environment we're in! Where better to work on ourselves?

Hey folks! Who is on your personal support team? How do you keep yourself running smoothly? Do you take the time to invest in your own personal well beaing? I talk quite often about the importance of taking the time to care for yourself, and, of course, I think that a meditation practice is a big part of that. However, often it takes a whole team to keep us centered, grounded, balanced, and fully operational and at our best. In this spirit, I wanted to take a moment to highlight one of the big players on my personal team, Dr. Melissa Windsor of Windsor Wellness in Reston. Dr. Windsor is one of those amazing individuals who really lives their mission with love, caring, compassion, and joy, and I couldn't be happier to have her on my team! Whether it's chiropractic, diet analysis, or just help in making the lifestyle choices that will work best for you, Dr. Windsor does it all, and it's a joy to have you on my own personal support team! Check out her website at www.windsorwellness.com. Thank you for all you do, Doc! You're the best and I appreciate you!

A big THANK YOU to this awesome group who gathered for our inaugural "First Fridays" event! We had an amazing meditation, some yummy snacks, and a really great conversation about Gratitude. It turns out that receiving gifts, no matter their form, can be more challenging that giving them, and it's important to, at all times, keep in mind that the intention behind the gift is the greatest gift there is. If you'd like to join us for the next one, we'll be hosting the December "First Fridays" event on December 7th from 6 - 8 PM, and you can RSVP for our "First Fridays" events at www.novaprana.org/first-fridays/.
