Pacific Northwest National Laboratory - PNNL

Last week, a group of PNNL scientists and engineers, along with staff from the U.S. Department of Energy Pacific Northwest Site Office, joined La Doris “Dot” Harris, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Economic Impact and Diversity. They spent time with about 100 middle school students and their teachers from the Tri-Cities, WA and beyond. Rotating in small-group “speed mentoring” sessions, participants learned about education and career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) from a wide-variety of STEM professionals.

PNNL scientists discovered that the year-to-year variability in the depth of warm ocean water plays an important role in the intensification of hurricanes in the Northeast tropical Pacific Ocean, which bring precipitation to the U.S. Southwest and Mexico. Previous studies focused mainly on the temperature at the water's surface as the key influence on developing hurricanes. Read more: http://1.usa.gov/LCBDFj

At 3.4 petaflops, it's the #13 #supercomputer in the world. Another reason EMSL draws users from around the globe.

EMSL’s new supercomputer, known as Cascade, earned a top 20 ranking on the international Top 500 List released in early November. Ranked at No. 13, it's a 3.4 petaflop system.

Cascade was designed to run computationally intensive climate and biological simulations aligned with the mission of the DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

It is the newest DOE Office of Science supercomputer in the top 20, and the sole supercomputer located at an institution in the Pacific Northwest in the top 20.

Women @ Energy Profile...

Women @ Energy Profile: "We should make the connections to other aspects of their lives. Most, importantly we should demystify the fact that STEM fields are hard and only for 'boys.' This needs to be taught often and repeatedly to young girls throughout elementary, middle school and high school. So, when they get to college they will be ready and excited about STEM and not afraid of it." - Novella Bridges http://1.usa.gov/18KH5xP
