South Georgia and quail hunting used to be synonymous. For generations, the whistle of a wild bobwhite was just part of life, and a walk through the pines and fields often meant flushing coveys along the way.

Today, finding wild quail is becoming a rare experience. Habitat loss and changing landscapes have taken a toll on a bird that was once a defining part of our region’s outdoor heritage.

Here’s to protecting the land, restoring habitat, and doing our part so future generations can experience the thrill of hearing a wild covey rise in the South Georgia woods. Some traditions are worth preserving.

I recently went to see a movie at GTC Pooler Cinemas, and while using the men’s restroom I noticed this sign about their water-free urinals. It may seem like a small thing to most people, but I actually stopped and appreciated it.

Whether this system saves a tremendous amount of water or not isn’t really the point. The point is that a company chose to make an effort to conserve a natural resource. In a world where it’s easy to criticize, I think it’s just as important to recognize when businesses are trying to do something positive.

Conservation isn’t always about massive projects or sweeping policy changes. Sometimes it’s the small, practical decisions that collectively make a difference.

So, credit where it’s due. Good job, GTC Pooler Cinemas. I appreciate seeing a local business making an effort to conserve water. Even the smallest steps toward protecting our natural resources are worth recognizing.

Today, we celebrate 250 years of America.

For two and a half centuries, this nation has stood as a symbol of freedom, courage, sacrifice, and hope. We are not perfect, but generation after generation, Americans have continued the work of building a more perfect Union.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, may we remember those who fought for our freedoms, honor those who still defend them, and never take for granted the blessings we have in this great country we call home.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary of this great nation, I couldn’t be more excited or proud to share something special.

This is disappointing news for Georgia’s recreational anglers. While I appreciate the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ continued commitment to expanding red snapper opportunities, it’s unfortunate that a federal court ruling has delayed what was expected to be a 62-day season beginning July 1.

Hopefully, the legal issues can be resolved quickly so anglers can enjoy a red snapper season later this fall. I’ll be keeping an eye on future updates and remain hopeful for a positive outcome for Georgia’s coastal communities and fishing industry.

⚠️ RED SNAPPER UPDATE ⚠️

Unfortunately, Georgia's proposed recreational red snapper season scheduled to begin July 1 has been delayed following a federal court ruling affecting pilot programs in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

A federal judge issued an injunction that prevents the implementation of the permits while a legal challenge moves forward. As a result, the planned 62-day Georgia red snapper season will not take place on the schedule anticipated. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which spearheaded the initial EFP, has withdrawn its request and will re-submit a new EFP application.

🎣 While this is disappointing news, Georgia DNR remains committed to expanding red snapper fishing opportunities for our anglers. We are already working with our partner states and federal officials to develop a revised permit application with the goal of establishing a red snapper season later this fall.

"We will continue working toward a solution that balances the biological needs of the fishery with the social and economic importance of recreational fishing," said DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon.

On Tuesday, June 9, I had the opportunity to attend the Liberty County Development Authority’s public meeting in Hinesville regarding the proposed Laurel View Wastewater Reclamation Facility. I was extremely encouraged by the number of residents who took the time to attend, voice their opinions, and stand together in support of protecting our coastal ecosystem.

Moments like these make me even more proud to call Coastal Georgia home. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a District Supervisor and to play a small role in helping protect every acre of land and every gallon of water, ensuring these resources are used wisely while preserving our natural environment for future generations.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments through June 30 on proposed changes to recreational red drum regulations. Proposed changes include reducing the daily limit from 5 fish to 3 fish and adjusting the slot size from 14–23 inches to 15–24 inches.

If you have an opinion, make sure your voice is heard. Social media comments do not count as official public comments.
