On World Alzheimer's Day, we raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, and challenge stigma around neurological conditions that affect memory, thinking, and behavior.

Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. According to the Alzheimer's Association, about 1 in 9 people age 65 and older is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Visit alz.org to find out more about Alzheimer's and how to get involved in the fight against this disease.

Today is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. According to the AIDS Institute, about 1 in 4 adults in the US who are living with HIV are 50 or older. Aging is a part of life. HIV doesn't have to be.

Use a food thermometer to make sure you aren't undercooking or overcooking meats. Here's an overview:

🐟The minimum safe temperature for fish, eggs, shellfish, whole-muscle beef steaks, lamb, veal, and pork is 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
🍽Pre-cooked hams only need to be reheated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Uncooked hams should reach 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
🍳Egg dishes and ground meats like hamburger and sausage should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
🍗Poultry must reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

During Healthy Aging Month, we'd like to highlight some do's and don'ts of communicating with a person with Alzheimer's disease. People with Alzheimer's may struggle to convey thoughts and may forget what they were saying. Take a look at this chart for things to keep in mind, and remember to be patient.

A new federal work requirement is coming in 2027 to Medicaid Expansion members. Advocates can help members stay informed. Virginia Medicaid will share clear information ahead of time, so you and your loved ones know what to expect. Virginia Medicaid will provide resources and advance notice to help eligible members understand upcoming changes and maintain coverage.

More immediately, Medicaid is changing for non-U.S. citizens starting on October 1, 2026.
