DCJS Director Ashaki McNeil, Chief Deputy Director Harvey Powers, and Division of Law Enforcement Director Rick Collins joined chiefs and other law enforcement leaders in Roanoke, earlier this week, for the annual gathering of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation.

There, DCJS presented on matters relevant to those leading Virginia Law Enforcement agencies, discussed current issues in the profession, and identified potential solutions.

DCJS leadership were honored to join Governor Spanberger in celebrating the heroism of numerous Virginia Law Enforcement professionals from all over Virginia.

This high honor recognizes officers who have demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the line of duty while facing imminent personal risk.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sheriff Steve Draper, a dedicated law enforcement leader and Chairman of the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC).

Sheriff Draper devoted his career to serving the citizens of Virginia and to advancing professionalism, integrity, and excellence throughout the law enforcement community. His leadership, commitment to high standards, and unwavering dedication to public service made a lasting impact on the agencies and professionals he served alongside.

As Chairman of VLEPSC, Sheriff Draper provided thoughtful leadership and helped strengthen the standards and practices that support excellence in Virginia law enforcement.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Sheriff Draper’s family, friends, colleagues, and the members of the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time.

We honor his life, his service, and his enduring legacy.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Draper. Your service will not be forgotten.

This summer, Virginia’s School Resource Officers (SROs) continued building the skills they need to support safe, positive school communities. Forty-seven SROs completed SRO Basic Training in Virginia Beach from July 27–30, followed by 20 SROs who completed Advanced SRO Training August 5–7. Both courses brought together law enforcement professionals from agencies across the Commonwealth.

SRO Basic Training prepares new SROs for success in the school environment, while Advanced SRO Training builds on that foundation with leadership development, school safety strategies, advanced crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) concepts and hands-on, scenario-based training.

One of the key training modules: “Current Trends in School Safety: Social Media and Youth,” is provided via partnership with the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, based in the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. Their expertise helps ensure that SROs understand the evolving digital landscape and the challenges facing today’s students.
