VA50501 does not officially endorse candidates, but we could not sit idly by when we heard that the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) were not remaining neutral in the Democratic primary race happening in VA-01/CD-01.

Virginia Mercury published an article on July 21st that included a letter signed by current candidates and several other currently sitting lawmakers questioning the neutrality of DPVA. In the letter it cites newly disclosed FEC campaign finance records showing a ‘Shannon Taylor Victory Fund’ had been created before early voting ended and before the primary election day occurred, raising conflict-of-interest questions. Shannon Taylor has also accepted a total of $800,000 from Dominion Energy.

The VA-01/CD-01 is a vital seat that will end up going up against Republican incumbent Rob Wittman in the midterms (Wittman has been avoiding meeting with his constituents directly over the last year and voted to cut healthcare including Medicaid.) It’ll be vital to have someone on the Democratic ticket that will actually push back on DJT and his admin. Instead of going with another predetermined established Democratic nominee, vote for one of the following progressive candidates instead in the primary race!

Check out Ballotpedia or the Virginia Dept of Elections to see what is on your ballot, you can also verify your voting district if you’re unsure.

🚨UPDATE 7/17 as of 1:45 pm

Due to the upgraded code purple air quality alert issued, we have made the difficult decision to unfortunately cancel the cookout planned for today. We wanted to ensure the health and safety of attendees and volunteers and avoid unintentional harm to anyone’s health, so the cookout is officially cancelled**. We are so incredibly appreciative of all the preparation and work that had been done by volunteers leading up to the community cookout, along with the support from SCLC, League of Women Voters, Center for Common Ground, Richmond City Democratic Committee, and the African drummers from Drums Not Guns Foundation. Thank you to everyone! We look forward to working with you all in the near future on another action.

**Even though we had to cancel the cookout, there’s still an evening of indoor activities happening tonight! SCLC will still host their planned indoor activities to commemorate the late civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis starting at 6:30 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church. There will be music, spoken word artists, and a panel discussion.

🚨ICYMI - Update on tomorrow’s (Friday) cookout!!

Working with community leaders the free cookout is happening 5pm at Abner Clay Park to support our friends at SCLC.

The Richmond Chapter of SCLC will be hosting an evening of activities at Ebenezer Church that include a panel discussion and vigil lighting procession, joined by LWV and Center for Common Ground.

African drummers from Drums No Guns Foundation will be playing at the cookout, and RCDC will be doing a voter registration drive. The free community cookout hosted by VA50501 will lead into SCLC’s evening of activities.

📍Friday, July 17th Community Cookout
📍5 pm - 6:30 pm
📍Abner Clay Park

VA50501 is planning to do the screening of the documentary at a later different event, and instead are partnering to support SCLC’s efforts in commemorating Congressman Lewis. SCLC has a long history in the civil rights movement, with its first president being MLK Jr.

This year’s “Good Trouble Lives On” calls for a weekend of action, with the theme of “TEACH! REACH! PREACH!”

On the sixth anniversary of Congressman Lewis’s passing, Richmond will host Friday’s “TEACH!” theme day. It will be a community connect event with VA50501 Richmond hosting a cookout and screening.

📍Friday, July 17, 2026
📍7pm cookout with screening afterwards
📍Marcus-David Peters Circle

Getting into “good trouble, necessary trouble” is needed more than ever as we witness the systematic attempts to restrict our freedoms and silence our voices … while they work to consolidate power. We will show that Good Trouble Lives On, and that the power still rests with the people when we come together and organize.

Tomorrow, Wednesday July 1st - VA50501 and endorsing organizations invite you to join us in telling Gov. Spanberger that her vetoes were unacceptable and that she needs to get it right during the next legislative session.

📍Wednesday, July 1st
📍4 pm Rally
📍Bell Tower at Capitol Square

We’ll be spotlighting the vetoes of the collective bargaining bill, warrantless ICE arrests at courthouses, the prescription drug affordability board and the red onion transfer ban - but it includes all 31 vetoes. We are here to remind elected officials that they got their job in order to work FOR THE PEOPLE.
