🚨Trump Targets Cuellar as South Texas Midterm Race Begins to Take Shape

President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar on Monday, using a lengthy Truth Social post to defend his decision to pardon the South Texas Democrat while arguing that Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina is the better choice to represent Texas’ 28th Congressional District.

In the post, Trump recounted his decision to grant Rep. Henry and Imelda Cuellar a full and unconditional presidential pardon following the congressman’s federal criminal case. Trump said he reviewed the case, examined Cuellar’s financial records, and was moved by letters from the couple’s daughters requesting clemency. He also repeated his claim that the Biden administration unfairly targeted Cuellar because of the congressman’s positions on border security.

Trump, who has endorsed Tijerina in the race, said he never expected Cuellar to run for office again after receiving the pardon. He wrote that although he believed Cuellar’s views on border security were stronger than those of many Democrats, he now believes Tijerina is better aligned with his priorities on border security, tax policy, military funding and other issues.

The president also argued that despite granting Cuellar a pardon, he is now working to defeat the longtime Democratic congressman in the 2026 election. Trump’s latest remarks underscore the national attention surrounding Texas’ 28th Congressional District, where Republicans are hoping to unseat one of the last remaining Democratic incumbents along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cuellar, who has represented the district since 2005, is seeking another term as both parties prepare for what is expected to be a competitive midterm election.
