They’re hoping to help protect Black mothers and babies.

After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of his twin sons, Brad Edwards created “Dads to Doulas,” a program helping fathers better support mothers through pregnancy and birth.

As I continue working across New Mexico's health, nonprofit, and community sectors, one thing has become increasingly clear:

Workforce development is not just about recruiting talent. It's about creating environments where talent can thrive, grow, lead, and stay.

I am exploring the development of a new workforce initiative focused on strengthening organizational capacity through meaningful conversations around cultural representation, belonging, leadership pathways, cultural responsiveness, and community trust.

Too often, organizations struggle to recruit and retain diverse talent while simultaneously trying to build authentic relationships with the communities they serve. Addressing these challenges requires more than good intentions—it requires strategy, accountability, and a willingness to listen.

This initiative would focus on:

✔ Leadership development and advancement pathways

✔ Employee engagement and retention

✔ Community-informed decision making

✔ Culturally responsive workforce practices

✔ Building trust with historically underserved communities

✔ Creating workplaces where all employees feel valued and supported

Strong organizations are built by strong people. Strong people stay where they are respected, heard, and given opportunities to grow.

I would love to connect with healthcare leaders, nonprofits, educational institutions, community advocates, and workforce development professionals who are interested in helping shape this conversation across New Mexico.

What workforce challenges are you seeing in your organization or community?

Maternal mental health is community health.

Perinatal mood disorders do not happen in isolation—and healing shouldn’t happen in isolation either. Stress, lack of support, racism, financial strain, barriers to care, and overwhelming expectations all impact maternal mental health.

Full-spectrum doulas help hold emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. Compassionate care can make a difference.

This Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, we work toward a future where asking for help is normalized, support is accessible, and families are cared for with dignity and understanding.

You deserve support. Your mental health matters.

A doula's only agenda should be empowering her client.

Your roll is not to pressure, coerce, fear monger, or suggest a client should birth in any specific way.

Your role is to provide evidence-based information, encourage clients to be active participants in the decision making process, and then support them as they make the empowered decisions that are right for them.

Two people can have the same evidence-based information and decide its application is different in their personal decisions.

A client should never feel pressured to birth a certain way, whether by a doula or a provider. A client should be encouraged to make informed choices that are right for them.

It's Pride Month, and we're here for it!

As our friends from Organizers Alliance put it so well, "Since time immemorial, Indigenous communities have honored and protected our Two Spirit and q***r kin, who were seen as closely connected to the divine in many cultures."

We will always celebrate and support our 2SLGBTQ+ family.
