Widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast across the area this afternoon and into the evening, with some capable of becoming severe. The environment supports a multi-hazard threat.
Primary Threats Include:
💨 Damaging Winds: This is the main threat. Swaths of 50–60 mph gusts will be possible in severe storms, with isolated gusts up to 70 mph.
🌧️ Torrential Rain: Heavy downpours will accompany these storms, which may cause highly localized flooding.
🌪️ Tornadoes & Hail: A line-embedded tornado or two and isolated instances of quarter-sized hail are also possible.
Timing: Storms may develop as early as noon and continue into the evening.

An unseasonably strong wind field expected aloft lends confidence to impactful severe weather occurring Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. All severe hazards (wind, hail, tornado, flooding) are possible with this activity but the primary threats are expected to be damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall. Monitor the latest forecast and ensure you have a way to receive warnings if they are issued.

❗️From the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP): Air Quality Alert❗️

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) has issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert for today due to smoke from Canadian wildfires affecting northern and central West Virginia. Elevated fine particulate matter is expected to persist through Saturday, with hazy conditions possible across much of the state.

⚪️A Code Red means the air is unhealthy for everyone, not just those with existing health conditions.

⚪️Please take the following precautions:
• Limit prolonged outdoor activity and strenuous exercise.
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Monitor children, older adults, and anyone with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions, as they are at greater risk for health impacts.

Jackson County Emergency Management encourages residents to stay informed by monitoring current air quality conditions and following guidance from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and local officials.

🚨 Traffic Alert 🚨

I-77 Northbound at the 119-mile marker is currently CLOSED due to a motor vehicle accident.

At this time, there is no estimated time for the roadway to reopen. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes and avoid the area if possible.

We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as they become available.

On July 4 2026 the Ripley Police Department will be shutting down all City traffic at 1115 am for the annual parade. Please allow time to get where you need by then.
After the parade if you are coming into the city from the northern end expect major delays due to construction and parade traffic. It would be best to enter the city from our other entrances.

We ask that everyone has patience and enjoys the many activities the city is offering on the 4th. Together let’s make this one of the best 4th of July celebrations.

It's going to be a hot one across Jackson County, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat indices making it feel even warmer. Whether you're working outside, mowing the yard, heading to the pool, or enjoying summer break, don't forget to take care of yourself. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses.

Please remember to:
💧 Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay indoors or in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
☀️ Limit strenuous outdoor activities and take frequent breaks in the shade.
🚗 Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
🐾 Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and access to shade.

Take a few moments to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Know the signs of heat-related illness:
⚠️ Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, or muscle cramps.
🚨 Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, or hot, dry skin. This is a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.
