Today we attended the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Memorial Ceremony, honoring the brave men and women of the department who passed away this past year.

Their courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with their families and fellow officers in gratitude and remembrance.

May we honor their legacy through service, unity, and respect for all who protect and serve.

Today, we honored Gavin McQuade, at the Suffolk County EMS Appreciation Week Celebration, as the First District's EMT of the Year Honoree!

Gavin McQuade exemplifies the very best of public service through his compassion, dedication, and commitment to helping others. In just his first year with the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, he responded to 315 emergency calls, earning recognition as both Top Responder and EMT of the Year. While volunteering countless hours in EMS, Gavin is also pursuing his paramedic certification at Stony Brook University and has already become a respected leader and mentor within the Corps.

Gavin’s service extends beyond EMS through his involvement with the Civil Air Patrol and his work as a lifeguard, where he continues to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and a genuine desire to serve others. His work ethic, humility, and passion for helping people make him an outstanding role model and a deserving recipient of Suffolk County’s District 1 EMT of the Year recognition.

Proud to celebrate the new Accessible Elevator and HVAC ribbon-cutting at the North Fork Arts Center in Greenport. The Arts are a cornerstone of a strong community, and accessibility helps make that a more expansive reality.

Huge shoutout to Alison Omens on being named Executive Director. Tony Spiridakis did a fantastic job leading the way and will continue to do so as Chairman of the Board.

Grateful for the opportunity to honor The Butterfly Effect Project at this week’s general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Founded in 2014 by Riverhead native Tijuana Fulford, BEP has grown from a single chapter serving eight girls into a countywide network supporting more than 760 young people across 35 chapters in Suffolk County.

The numbers speak for themselves. Over the past year, school attendance among participants rose 6%, GPAs increased 4.5%, 71% reported stronger confidence, and 84% reported stronger social connections. Every participant completed at least three community service projects. All seniors in the College Access program earned college acceptance. Fifteen youth secured jobs through BEP’s Job Readiness program.

Beyond youth programming, BEP is showing up for whole families. More than 1,200 pounds of fresh produce distributed. 288 students with back-to-school supplies. 275 holiday meal baskets. Support for roughly 500 individuals with clothing and household goods.

What Tia Fulford has built is a powerful example of community leadership in action. BEP is strengthening families, supporting youth, and building a stronger future for our communities.

Congratulations to the entire Butterfly Effect Project team

Yesterday we honored Peter Barraud, owner and head brewer of North Fork Brewing Company, as the 2026 Small Businessperson of the Year for the 1st Legislative District.

I’ve known Pete since the beginning and watched him build something special from the ground up. Today, North Fork Brewing is one of the best craft breweries in New York.

Pete, a lifelong resident of Baiting Hollow, lives there today with his wife and two sons. Before brewing, he spent nearly a decade as a special education teacher. That background shows in everything he’s built.

He founded North Fork Brewing in 2017 with a clear vision: world-class New York craft beer and a place that meant something to the people who live here.

That vision delivered. School supply drives, coat collections, toy drives, charitable events year-round. This isn’t a business that just operates in our community. It invests in it.

Pete also served as President of the Long Island Brewers Guild from 2020 to 2022, working with state officials to strengthen New York’s Farm Brewery program and open doors for the next generation of farmers.

This is exactly what Small Businessperson of the Year is supposed to look like. Congratulations, Pete. The First District is proud of you. Cheers brother.

Yesterday, County Executive Ed Romaine held a press conference calling out the Navy’s frustratingly slow cleanup of their mess at the former Grumman site in Calverton.

I was proud to stand alongside County Clerk Vincent Puleo, Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott, Riverhead Town Supervisor Jerry Halpin, and Riverhead Town Board Members Ken Rothwell, Bob Kern, Denise Merrifield, and Joann Waski. Together, we made clear that our residents deserve answers AND ACTION!

This is what local government working together looks like. The Navy needs to clean up their mess.

Grateful to be fighting alongside these dedicated local public servants. Our residents deserve better and I promise we won’t stop until the Navy delivers.

Please join me in congratulating District 1s Champion of Diversity Awardee- Dr. Sonia Spar

Dr. Sonia Spar is a recognized multilingual community leader, educator, and advocate whose life’s work reflects a deep and enduring commitment to building bridges of understanding across diverse communities in Southold Town, Suffolk County, and beyond.

A longtime resident of Southold and originally from Colombia, she has dedicated herself to fostering dialogue, strengthening relationships, and advancing equity in ways that transcend division.

In her role serving the Town of Southold, Sonia builds critical connections between local government, institutions, and multilingual residents, ensuring equitable access to information, services, and civic participation. Grounded in trust and cultural humility, her leadership reflects a steadfast belief that inclusive communities are cultivated through meaningful engagement.

Across both her professional and volunteer efforts, she has remained deeply committed to advancing this mission. This commitment is further reflected in her longstanding membership in the Southold Anti-Bias Task Force, her role as a member of the Northwell Community Health Advancement Taskforce, and her past service on the Hispanic Advisory Board to the County Executive.

Through these roles, along with many others she has undertaken over the years, Sonia has helped advance initiatives that foster dialogue, deepen understanding, and build relationships across cultural and faith-based communities.
