🌈 Happy Pride Month from Roanoke Pride! 🌈

Today marks the beginning of a month dedicated to visibility, remembrance, celebration, and community.

For Roanoke Pride, Pride Month is also an opportunity to honor our history. While LGBTQ+ people and allies in the Roanoke Valley were gathering and building community long before then, Roanoke Pride was formally organized in 1989. For more than three decades, generations of individuals have worked, volunteered, advocated, celebrated, and stood together to ensure that our community would be seen, heard, and valued.

Pride is often misunderstood. It is not about ego. It is not about being louder than someone else. It is not about personal agendas, old grievances, or divisions among ourselves.

Pride is about visibility.

It is about choosing light where there has been darkness. It is about standing together in a world that has not always welcomed us. It is about honoring those who came before us, supporting those who are with us today, and creating a future where everyone can live openly and authentically.

As we begin this Pride Month, we invite our community to put aside differences, embrace one another, and remember the purpose that brings us together. Pride is strongest when it is rooted in love, understanding, resilience, and unity.

From 1989 to today, our story continues because of each person who has helped carry the torch forward.

Happy Pride Month, Roanoke. May we continue to be a light for one another.
