2025 LOUIS BAY 2nd SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION DEADLINE MARCH 7

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - (Feb. 12, 2025) - Once again, the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) is proud to announce the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition for high school juniors and seniors planning to continue their education after high school.

The purpose of this scholarship, now in its 31st year, is to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general. This scholarship competition has been named in honor of Louis Bay 2nd, Mayor Emeritus of Hawthorne and an active participant as a League Board Member and Past President for 60 years.

Robbinsville Township has teamed up with the NJSLM to offer three $1,000 scholarships through the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. This year centers around the theme: “What I Like About My Hometown" and seeks to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer members of the municipal government. Many of the elected officials and appointed board members serve the municipality for little or no compensation. It is an altruistic desire to serve their community which compels them to public service. These officials, along with a cadre of other dedicated professionals, are the guardians of our hometown comfort and security. They give their time and talents year-round to help the community and preserve our way of life.

We hope this scholarship competition will help encourage and energize future municipal leaders. The deadline for submission is March 7, 2025. Award announcement will be on May 2.

William Swanhart Named to Succeed Michael K. Polaski as RTPD Chief

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - (October 25, 2024) - Robbinsville Township Mayor and Director of Public Safety Dave Fried announced today that Lieutenant William Swanhart has been named the next RTPD Chief of Police, effective January 1, 2025.

Swanhart, 43, will take the reins from outgoing Chief Michael K. Polaski, who announced his retirement effective December 31 after 25 years of exemplary public service, in August.

“Lt. Swanhart’s experience, training and steady hand certainly rose to the top during this process,” Fried said. “We are extremely fortunate to have such a deep and talented pool of qualified candidates, and I would have been proud to have any one of them as my chief. Mike will be greatly missed. He was the right man, at the right time, and at the end of the day I feel the exact same way about Lt. Swanhart.”

Swanhart joined the department in December of 2006. Prior to his appointment with the RTPD he worked for New Jersey Transit Police. Swanhart served as a patrolman until being assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit in October of 2012. In July of 2013, Swanhart was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he was assigned supervision of the Criminal Investigation’s Unit. Swanhart reached the rank of Lieutenant in July of 2016.

Since 2022, Swanhart has served as Administrative Lieutenant with duties that include oversight of the department’s Internal Affairs function, Public Information Officer, Field Training Officer Program, Traffic Unit, and School Resource Officers. During his career, Swanhart has been a Drug Recognition Expert, Evidence Custodian, Internal Affairs Officer, Department Training Coordinator, member of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Task Force, and worked with various federal, county, and local law enforcement partners.

“I’m very humbled by the opportunity to lead this great agency,” Swanhart said. “The groundwork was set for me by Chief (Marty) Masseroni, Chief (Chris) Nitti and Chief Polaski and I am excited to keep us moving forward. When you start at the academy as a recruit this is the pinnacle. Just incredibly proud to serve not only this agency, but the citizens of Robbinsville and I am looking forward to building a great relationship with them.”

Among his achievements, Lt. Swanhart garnered the State of New Jersey Highway Traffic Safety Top Gun DWI Enforcement award. In 2014 and 2015, he received training from the United States Secret Service in Hoover, Alabama in the area of computer forensics. After completing the FBI-LEEDA Law Enforcement Development Course in 2017, Lt. Swanhart graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2023, Session 285.

“I would like to congratulate Lt. Swanhart and his family of this achievement,” Chief Polaski said. “Lt. Swanhart has been an integral part of this agency for 18 years and possesses the knowledge and skill set to face the challenges that may lay ahead. The department is in good hands, and this will be a very smooth transition.”

Robbinsville Township Police Chief Mike Polaski Retiring after 25 Years of Service

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - (August 16, 2024) - Robbinsville Township Mayor and Director of Public Safety Dave Fried announced today that Police Chief Michael K. Polaski will retire effective December 31, 2024, after 25 years of exemplary public service.

Polaski was named the full-time replacement for former Chief Chris Nitti on January 1, 2022. Nitti had served the RTPD for 28 years, including the last three as chief.

“Needless to say, Mike will be greatly missed,” Fried said. “He was the right man, at the right time, with the ideal skill set to tackle the many components and extra intangibles that come with being chief. He recognized the vital importance of community policing and kept pushing those initiatives, and our community, forward in a direction with a level of transparency I have never before seen from another department. Mike is universally respected, was always a pleasure to have around, and brings a professionalism to the job that every mayor looks for in a chief. On behalf of my staff and Council we congratulate Mike and wish him, Stephanie, and their boys nothing but the best.”

Polaski, 49, began his career with the former Washington Township (now Robbinsville) Police Department on March 8, 1999 as a patrolman. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2003, then Lieutenant in 2009. In 2016, Polaski was named Administrative Lieutenant and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Coordinator.

“It's been a privilege and an honor to serve the residents of Robbinsville for nearly 26 years.” Polaski said. “Thank you to the Mayor and Council for unwavering support, and I am proud of what we accomplished in my three years.”

Polaski spearheaded many important community outreach programs and events. As Chief, he expanded the S.A.F.E. Team for community members with autism or other communication disorders. Through the expansion of the Chaplain program, Polaski provided a vital tool to comfort families and individuals suffering from the various traumas associated with tragedy and loss.

“We’re seeing substantially more positive community engagement, and that’s something we are all very proud of in the department,” Polaski said. “The increased transparency, an updated website, along with an increased social media presence is allowing us to stay better connected to the community.”

Beyond his community work, Polaski has worked to lead the RTPD well into the 21st century.

“We have replaced all in-car and body worn camera systems and have added additional training across the board.” Polaski said, “We expect to transition to the State’s radio system by year’s-end and the RTPD anticipates a full accreditation assessment this fall.”

Mayor Fried plans to begin interviews for Polaski’s replacement in October.

“Throughout my tenure as Chief, I have focused on succession planning at all levels of the agency,” Polaski said. “We have a very deep bench of talent throughout the agency. I know I am biased, but I personally feel we have the best police and communications officers in all of New Jersey, so the responsibility of protecting Robbinsville residents will be in very good hands.”

We received reports Wednesday from residents of a group of young men flying a racist flag near Route 130 in Robbinsville.
I am speaking out to say that hate speech and white supremacy have no place in Robbinsville Township. Ever. Full stop.
I will not be posting any photos because we must not give attention to this misguided ideology that only serves to further divide us.
We cannot infringe on people's right to free speech or assembly, and since it is not Township property, there are no permits to apply for. We have been in close contact with Mercer County Executive Dan Benson's office, and the Robbinsville Township Police Department have been closely monitoring the situation to avoid possible confrontations from counter-protesters.
This ideology has no place in ours, or any other community. Robbinsville is an incredibly diverse and inclusive community, and we will all work hard to keep it that way.

We hope to see you Tuesday at the Robbinsville Township Police Department Complex!
