At the end of 2018, 70.8 million from all over the world were forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, and human rights violations. That is double the amount compared to 20 years ago.

The Student Refugee Alliance is a student organization that works towards learning more about the issues impacting refugees and their settlement in Rochester.

Come to our General interest meeting this Wednesday, Sep 2nd to learn more about the refugee population in Rochester and how you can help and get involved through volunteering, Fundraising, and using your voice.

Refugee camps are hotspots for infectious diseases to rapidly take over and devastate communities. Many camps lack running water and basic sanitation. There is no space to social distance and adequate healthcare systems do not exist.

A refugee camp in Bangladesh has a population density nearly four times that of New York City and a refugee camp in Kenya has 8 doctors for 200,000 people.

Our Story

We have open E-board meetings on Mondays at 7.30pm in WilCo 121. Anyone is welcome to join to share ideas or input. Refugee Student Alliance currently has two volunteer sites: Refugees Helping Refugees and Carlson Library Tutoring. On Saturdays, from 12-5pm, former refugee students receive tutoring from any student volunteers on the middle floor of Carlson Library. They range from elementary to high school students. On Fridays, we drive over to Refugees Helping Refugees and help former refugees with classes ranging from computer use, English, to cooking. Previously, we have volunteered at Mary's Place, Children's School of Rochester, Rochester International Academy and Somali Center.
