This Spring, we were thrilled to have Shae join us as an intern from Luther College. Having her work alongside both our medical clinic and social services teams was an incredible asset to The Landing MN.

As her internship came to a close, she shared a few reflections about her experience with us:

“My social work internship at The Landing MN is one that I will never forget.

During my time with the organization, I worked with both the social services and medical services teams, assisting with care coordination and helping connect clients with needed community resources. I learned so much about the intersection between social services and healthcare, and got firsthand experience navigating many of the complicated systems individuals experiencing homelessness often face.

Most importantly, I learned about the importance of human connection.

Often, people experiencing homelessness are not treated with the dignity, respect, and compassion they deserve. However, at The Landing MN, the standard is the opposite. I deeply admired the way staff members and volunteers connected with and worked in partnership with clients, and I found great fulfillment in building those relationships myself.

The Landing MN embodies the philosophy of meeting people where they are — not only through the variety of services offered, but through a culture that tries to say ‘yes’ as much as possible.

Having no prior experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, I will admit I was initially apprehensive. But this experience challenged many of my assumptions and strengthened my understanding of the systemic barriers that contribute to homelessness.

Ultimately, my experience at The Landing MN reinforced the importance of treating all people with compassion, dignity, and respect, no matter their circumstances.”

Thank you, Shae, for the time, care, and compassion you shared with our guests, staff, and community during your internship. We are excited to see where your future in social work takes you, and we know you will continue making a difference wherever you go.

“Everybody has a story.” 💙

We are incredibly grateful to Root River Current and writer Kristin Burdey for recently highlighting the work happening each day at The Landing MN in their article, “Inside The Landing MN’s Lifeline for the Rochester-area’s Unhoused Community.”

The piece offers a thoughtful look into the realities of homelessness in our community, the partnerships that make this work possible, and the dignity, compassion, and connection that guide everything we do.

“They just have bad days", says Shawna Bowman, Director of Operation. "They’ve gone through some hard times, some trauma, and made some mistakes. But everybody is somebody’s son or daughter, or mom or dad, or uncle or cousin. Each person is an individual, and they’re wonderful.”

We’re thankful to Kristin — who also volunteers with us — for taking the time to share these stories with such care and humanity.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind our doors, or wanted to better understand the challenges our neighbors experiencing homelessness face each day, we encourage you to give it a read. Just follow the link in the comments.

Success Story 💙

We often say that support systems matter — and Robert’s story is a powerful example of why.

A few months ago, Robert came to The Landing MN while navigating medical challenges and hoping to relocate to the Rochester area. After connecting with our social services team, he learned that the waitlist for subsidized housing locally is currently around 18 months.

Rather than giving up, our team worked alongside Robert to explore other options and helped him secure an apartment in Austin, MN. While he hoped to remain in Rochester, he made the courageous decision to accept stable housing while continuing to look for opportunities closer to this community.

Because of the support from his family, community resources, and our social services team, Robert only experienced homelessness for a few months. The Landing MN was also able to connect him with county resources that provided furniture assistance and help with his deposit.

Stories like Robert’s remind us that homelessness is not solved alone. The more support, encouragement, and community connection someone has, the greater the opportunity for long-term stability and success.

We are grateful to Robert for allowing us to walk alongside him on this journey — and thankful for the family and community members who helped make this transition possible. 💙

Our hearts are so full of gratitude! 💙

A huge thank you to this incredible group of Girl Scouts from troop number 47999 out of Stewartville for their generosity and kindness. Not only did they donate cookies to guests at The Landing MN, but they also went above and beyond by collecting bottled water—one of the most needed items at our day center.

We were also honored that they invited our staff members, Stephanie, Director of Social Services, and Crystal, Medical Services Coordinator, to speak at their final meeting of the year and share more about who we are and the work we do.

Thank you for your thoughtful donations, your compassion, and your willingness to learn more about our mission and the people we serve. Your support truly makes a difference, and we are so grateful for each of you! ✨

For many people in our community, MOU — our Mobile Outreach Unit — was one of the very first ways they encountered The Landing MN.

Long before our day center welcomed thousands of guests each year, MOU helped us meet people where they were. It carried supplies, resources, conversation, compassion, and connection into the community during some of the earliest chapters of our organization’s story.

But growth changes things.

Over the years, The Landing MN has evolved into a more centralized model of care through our day center — allowing us to provide more consistent support, expanded services, medical care, meals, showers, laundry, housing navigation, and community connection all under one roof.

Because of that growth, we’ve reached a point where MOU is no longer a core part of our daily operations.

So with a lot of gratitude for the role it played, we’ve made the decision to put MOU up for sale.

🚚 2019 Chevrolet Express G3500 Box Truck
📍 Rochester, MN
💲 $36,000

Most importantly: every dollar from this sale will go directly back into supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.

In a lot of ways, this doesn’t feel like the end of something — it feels like a reminder of how far this organization has come.

Thank you to everyone who helped MOU make an impact over the years. And thank you for continuing to help us grow into what comes next.

For many veterans, the transition home can come with challenges most people never see — loss of community, lack of support systems, difficulty asking for help, housing instability, mental health struggles, and the overwhelming feeling of navigating it all alone.

That’s why partnerships matter.

We recently sat down with MACV (Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans) Regional Manager Sadie Rezac and The Landing MN Executive Director Alex Hurlebaus — both veterans themselves — for an honest conversation about trust, transition, homelessness, and the importance of community support for those who served.

The result is a new short film highlighting the partnership between MACV and The Landing MN, and the work being done together to help veterans move from crisis toward stability, connection, and hope.

“MACV isn’t going to solve homelessness by ourselves. We have to have community partners like The Landing.”

“No one’s story — veteran or not — ends in homelessness. It shouldn’t.”

Healing and stability rarely happen through one organization alone. It happens through relationships. Through trust. Through communities willing to show up for one another.

🎥 Watch the full video below.

And for those wanting to go deeper, we’ve also released a companion video on our YouTube page featuring raw, uncut portions of Alex and Sadie’s conversation — a behind-the-scenes look at the real experiences, insights, and personal stories that shaped this film.

We’ll drop that link in the comments below.

Today, we’re honored to share a message from our Executive Director reflecting on this year’s guiding value at The Landing MN.

"At the beginning of this year, we centered our work around one word: Connection.

Not as a tagline — but as a standard for how we serve, partner, and show up every day.

Over the past four months, we’ve watched that word come to life in powerful ways.

Connection has meant meeting people exactly where they are — on some of the hardest days of their lives — and making sure they’re not facing those moments alone. It’s been present in shared meals, in conversations that carry weight, in moments of trust that don’t come easily but matter deeply when they do.

It’s also taken shape beyond our walls.

We’ve built new and meaningful connections with partners like MAC-V and Any Path Home — organizations and coalitions who share the same urgency and commitment to walking alongside individuals experiencing homelessness. These partnerships aren’t just collaborations; they’re lifelines that expand what’s possible for the people we serve, helping bridge gaps and open doors that no single organization can do alone.

Connection is not always easy work. It requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to lean into complexity. But time and again, it reminds us that real change starts with relationships.

As we move through the rest of the year, we’re continuing to ask:

Where can we go deeper — not just in services, but in relationships?
Who is still unseen, unheard, or unsure if they belong here?
How do we strengthen the bridges between organizations so no one falls through the cracks?
And how do we continue building a community where connection isn’t just offered — but felt?

To everyone who has supported this work, partnered with us, or simply believed in the dignity and worth of every person — thank you. You are part of this connection. You are part of this movement."

Our garden crew was back! 🌱

We are incredibly grateful to the Mayo Clinic Divisions of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Endocrinology for once again joining forces to plant garden beds on the back patio at our Day Center.

This amazing group has supported us for several years, and their continued commitment means so much to our community. Providing fresh vegetables to individuals experiencing homelessness is an important part of supporting health and wellness — especially for those who may not always have the time, access, or resources to prioritize nutritious food.

Thank you for helping our garden, and our community, continue to grow! 💚
