Three Polling Locations Closed for April Election

For the first time in my election authority career, I have three polling locations that do not have anything on the ballot and therefore the Tarkio, Westboro and Fairfax polling locations will be CLOSED on Tuesday, April 7th.

The non-election notice was published a few weeks ago outlining all the political sub-divisions that had equal number file for open positions. When this happens, they are not required to place the position on the ballot saving hundreds of tax dollars and the candidates will be certified accordingly.

The only polling location that will be OPEN on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026, will be Rock Port, but it also has very limited issues that will be voted on. The City of Rock Port had one person file for Southward and one person file as a write-in for Northward. That will be the only issue on the City of Rock Port ballot. Therefore, we will be using the small room at the Velma Houts building to conduct the election. You enter it from the front of the building, and we will have the door clearly marked.

The Phelps City Road District had one person file for an open board position, and their tax levy is up for renewal. It is required by law to be renewed every four years, so this is merely a renewal. If you live within the boundaries of the Phelps City Road District, this will be the only two things on your ballot to vote on.

If you normally vote at the Velma Hout’s building and you do not live within the city limits of Rock Port or the Phelp City Road District you do not have any issues to vote on at the April election.

In closing, Tarkio, Westboro and Fairfax polling locations will be CLOSED on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026, and Rock Port will have limited issues (no issues for Watson or rural voters outside of the Phelps City Road District). Please watch for the sample ballot on our website, and the publication two weeks prior to the election.

NOTICE!
All Atchison County Offices, departments, and Circuit judicial courts that are open to the public will be closed this Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 24-26, 2025, in observance of the Christmas holiday.
In coordination with Presiding Judge Corey Herron. Atchison County policy guidance is to follow the State of Missouri holiday closure list, which already included the day after Christmas.
County offices will reopen on Monday. Dec. 29, at 8:30 a.m.

PSA: Candidate filing starts tomorrow! Those who wish to file need to first file a 5120 form (Affidavit of paid taxes) with the Department of Revenue. This form can be found at dor.mo.gov/personal/candidates/ . Once you file the 5120, you will receive a confirmation email and will need to bring that when you file for candidacy.

Fire Districts, Road Districts, Public Water Supply District, and City of Westboro all file at the County Clerk’s office.

Rock Port, Tarkio, Fairfax, and Watson file with each city clerk. Atchison-Holt Ambulance file with the District Board Secretary. And each school will file with their Superintendant's office!

The Missouri Department of Revenue Taxation Division administers Missouri tax law.
